Job Description:

Raritan Valley Community College (RVCC) seeks an experienced and dynamic academic leader to accept the challenge of being appointed as the College's Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs is the Chief Academic Officer of the College and provides the academic leadership and policy direction required to achieve the highest standards of excellence in instruction and academic programs. Partnering with the President and leading a seasoned Executive Staff, the Provost/VP will assume an ever-expansive portfolio of responsibilities: leading comprehensive program review, promoting the work of the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship, leading innovative partnerships with K-12 and with regional employers, sustaining our transformational prison education program, building a college-wide grant seeking culture, developing online learning and other entrepreneurial programming, and crafting vital strategic plans, especially those related to recruitment, retention, closing the equity gap and student success.  In the capacity of chief academic officer, the Provost/Vice President assumes leadership of the College in the absence of the President.

The Provost/ Vice President will lead campus-wide transformations, always supporting student success and promoting a culture of innovation and advocacy. Ideal candidates will recognize this opportunity to lead and the possibilities of creating institution wide change.

Responsibilities include, but not limited to:

Assumes leadership of the College in the absence of the President, provides academic vision and leadership in the development of sound academic policy, and is responsible for the development, quality, and operation of all academic programs and services.

Collaborates with the Deans, other administrators, department chairs, and faculty to develop a learning-focused environment that promotes academic innovation and student success through faculty excellence and comprehensive student support services.

Promotes enthusiasm among faculty for involvement in creative and alternative teaching techniques and faculty engagement in the collegial nature of the academy.

Coordinates strategic and operational planning for all academic programs and services.

Directs the College's academic programs, including the development of curricula, and the implementation, coordination, and assessment of student learning outcomes and the assessment of all academic programs.

Leads the faculty to ensure effective teaching and learning; establishes an environment that fosters academic innovation, and oversees a comprehensive program of faculty development, including an evaluation process for full-time and part-time faculty.

Analyzes academic program effectiveness and student learning outcome assessments; Reviews and recommends to the President all new academic programs; reviews and approves all new courses and curricular revisions; determines new program needs; and initiates new programs.

Provides leadership in the formulation and implementation of academic policies and procedures.

Provides direction and leadership for course schedule management to meet the needs of students and to create maximum efficiency in staffing and facility usage.

Develops and recommends an annual budget request to support academic goals and objectives; allocates and monitors spending of the academic budget, including academic department budget.

Recommends faculty personnel actions to the President, including appointments, reappointments, tenure, promotions, and sabbaticals.

Reviews the organizational structure of the College and recommends changes to make the College more effective and more responsive to the students and the community.

Serves as a member of the Executive Staff. Attends all Board meetings and Board committee meetings as required.

Assumes a leadership role, along with the president, with external groups to help meet local workforce needs and to prepare students for productive careers.

 

Preferred and Required Qualifications

Requirements:

The successful candidate will have:

  • An earned doctorate from an accredited institution
  • A distinguished and demonstrated record of academic accomplishment in teaching and service
  • A minimum of five years of creative and visionary leadership in academic initiatives at a dean's level or higher
  • A demonstrated commitment to the multiple and complex goals of a community college. 
  • Leadership that provides and supports student centered services with a commitment to diversity, inclusivity and equity in the classroom and on campus. 
  • Demonstrated commitment to student retention and completion. 
  • A willingness to seek new methods of delivery to accomplish these goals.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Significant teaching experience, preferably at a community college. 
  • Thorough understanding of classroom practices, including teaching methodologies, assessment systems and educational technology. 
  • Experience in curriculum development, outcomes assessment, and faculty development. 
  • Competence in financial matters. 
  • Commitment to providing quality student-oriented and student-centered services.
