Job Description

The Dean of Student and Associate Vice President for Student, under general direction, directs division and departmental operations, initiatives, and activities for Student Affairs. Oversees the division's business or other major functional areas activities.

  • Staff Development: Supervises, influences, and motivates a diverse administrative management team, providing on-going staff development and performance assessments; initiates formal and informal cross-training and information exchanges that promote opportunities for interdepartmental engagement; assesses opportunities to reallocate or redistribute aspects of program areas that may be beneficial to the capacity and expertise of Student Affairs departmental leaders.
  • Management - Department of Student Life: Provides daily operational management and supervision of all departmental program areas; sets direction for major component of departmental planning and execution: Strategic planning, budget development, personnel issues, and administrative functions within the department.
  • Internal Relationship Management: Creates, nurtures, and maintains a positive and productive working relationship with departments within and across the Division of Student Affairs and with various departments external to the division; represents the Department of Student Life in other professional activities on and off campus as deemed appropriate for the role.
  • University Leadership: Serves on university and division committees including but not limited to: New Student Orientation, Executive Committee, Graduate Student Council and New Student Conference Committee.
  • Program Development: Establishes and administers programs for parents; Establishes departmental outreach to local communities, and other organizations supportive of the mission of Prairie View A&M University, the Division of Student Affairs, and the Department of Student Life.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience:
  • Master's degree in Student Affairs Administration, Higher Education, or related field.
  • Eight (8) years full-time experience in an educational administrative environment, staff supervision and program development.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
  • Oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Doctorate degree.
  • Eight or more year progressively responsible management experience in Student Affairs.
