Job Description

General Statement of Duties:

The counselor is mainly responsible for planning of program events including the Summer Scholars Program along with HEOP student counseling.  The counselor of HEOP reports to the Director of HEOP. This is a full time position (1 FTE).


Specific Duties:

  • Provide academic, personal, financial and career counseling to students and make referrals as needed to ease problems and facilitate retention
  • Assist participants in assessing skills and goals and encourage their participation in academic support activities
  • Coordinate and participate in annual Advocacy Day event
  • Coordinate two major programs per year for HEOP students
  • Maintain appropriate records on student academic progress and financial aid
  • Monitor students’ academic performance and progress through review of tutor contacts, class tests, midterm, final grades, and completion of financial aid verification and waiver documentation
  • Attend HEOP related meetings/conferences as approved by the Director
  • Serve on college committees where appropriate


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Master’s degree preferred in Student Personnel Administration, counseling or related field with 2-3 years experience in working with a disadvantaged population in an educational setting
  • Demonstrated organizational ability, supervisory skills and a strong interest in student development
  • Knowledge of counseling theories and techniques
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated flexibility and proven interpersonal skills
  • Sensitivity to special needs of minority and disadvantaged students
