 Vice President for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

 

The State University of New York College (SUNY) at Plattsburgh is seeking well-qualified, dynamic candidates for the position of Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI). Reporting directly to the College’s President and acting as a member of the President’s cabinet, the Vice President will create and implement policy to reflect our commitment to inclusive excellence, evaluate inclusiveness, and implement best practices related to diversity, equity and inclusion.

Situated in one of the world’s most beautiful regions – SUNY Plattsburgh’s main campus is on the Saranac River adjacent to Lake Champlain between the Adirondack Mountains of New York and Green Mountains of Vermont. SUNY Plattsburgh is a vibrant, public, comprehensive college, and member of the State University of New York’s (SUNY) system of higher education committed to student-centered academic excellence. While the college enrolls approximately 4800 students in 70+ baccalaureate, certificate, and master’s programs, an average class size of 22 students allows the individual attention necessary to ensure that its graduates are educated to succeed in an increasingly complex, multicultural and interdependent world.

The successful candidate will be an experienced and compassionate leader who can anticipate, plan for, and assess the policies and practices of DEI. The successful candidate will also be an advocate for creating cultural and organizational change amongst the campus community.

The Vice President will be responsible for leading the further development, implementation, and ongoing assessment/monitoring of SUNY Plattsburgh’s strategic plan for diversity and inclusion,  including expansion of programming through the Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation Campus Center and work of the Leading for Change Racial Equity and Justice Institute (REJI) to reduce racial educational equity gaps. The division also includes the college's Title IX office. Additionally, the Vice President will establish and nurture collaborative partnerships with all stakeholders: faculty, students, staff and the Plattsburgh community. The leader will be in partnership with the other Vice Presidents and academic deans who are committed to the current and future DEI work on the campus. Other partnerships will include Human Resource Services, Affirmative Action, Student Accessibility Services, Strategic Enrollment Management, Faculty Senate, the Center for Teaching Excellence, Technology Enhanced Learning Unit, The Learning Center, Institute for Ethics in Public Life, collective bargaining units and other college stakeholders.

 

Preferred and Required Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have the following required professional qualifications and personal characteristics:

A Master’s degree in any related field;A minimum of five years of professional experience in higher education; Proven ability to provide DEI strategic leadership, build a common vision and cultivate a collaborative culture relative to DEI and institutional goals; Demonstrated knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, regulations and guidelines related to Title IX and civil rights enforcement; Demonstrated administrative and management skills and the ability to develop a DEI team; Proven ability to communicate effectively, through written as well as interpersonal and group communication, at all levels of the college, with administration, faculty, staff, students, and external constituents including alumni; Knowledge of and commitment to contemporary issues of inclusion, social justice, diversity, access, and equity, including the current scholarship and pedagogical approaches that inform and address these issues. Preferred qualifications and personal characteristics are: A terminal degree in any related field; Five years of professional experience with Diversity, Equity and Inclusion work; Proven ability to fulfill the National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education’s “Standards of Professional Practice for CDOs”; Teaching experience at the post-secondary level; Training in trauma-informed interviewing techniques; Proven experience investigating Title IX reports; Proven supervisory experience of small to moderately sized teams; Familiarity with public higher education; External grant-seeking experience; and demonstrated experience leading transformational or organizational change.
