Job Description


Benedictine University invites applications for the position of Dean of the College of Liberal Arts.  The position will report to the Provost and Chief Academic Officer with a start date of July 1, 2022.

The College of Liberal Arts is located on Benedictine University’s campus in Lisle, IL near what is considered to be the region’s “technology and research corridor” 20 miles west of Chicago.  The College of Liberal Arts offers over 20 undergraduate programs along with two masters programs in clinical psychology and linguistics.  In addition to the undergraduate and graduate programs, the College of Liberal Arts serves the core of the university’s general education curriculum. 


The College of Liberal Arts seeks a dynamic and transformative leader who will drive innovation, cultivate creativity, support an environment that values high-quality teaching and learning, foster academic research, and create a model for the future of the liberal arts.


The responsibilities of the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts include the following:

  • Provide vision and strategic direction to the college consistent with the mission, vision and Hallmarks of Benedictine University.
  • Work collaboratively with the Provost and Chief Academic Officer to pursue the strategic goals set for the Division of Academic Affairs and the college.
  • Establish a vision and implement a plan to develop learning experiences for undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education students within the liberal arts.
  • Work collaboratively with the university’s enrollment management along with marketing and communication to ensure program growth in the recruitment of students.
  • Establish external relationships to further program development and recognition, expand the college’s resource base through grants, contracts, and fundraising.
  • Oversee the development and assessment of new and existing programs to ensure academic quality and external recognition.
  • Supervise, evaluate, and develop faculty and staff in collaboration with department and program chairs.
  • Prepare and manage the college budget.
  • Maintain specific accreditations for the college’s programs.  
  • Pursue excellence in all college operations.

Preferred and Required Qualifications

  • Earned Ph.D. in a discipline within the college and credentials appropriate to hold the rank of full professor.
  • Preferred five years of demonstrated administrate academic experience in higher education (dean, associate dean, program director, department chair, or equivalent).
  • Experience with multiple learning platforms to include face-to-face, online, and hybrid formats and the emerging educational needs of stakeholders within the liberal arts disciplines.
  • Experience in data-informed decision making to guide program development, implementation, evaluation, and quality improvement.
  • Experience in building external relationships and fundraising.
  • Experience in the supervision, evaluation and professional development of the faculty and staff.
  • Leadership skills rooted in integrity and transparency that embody shared governance and effective decision-making.
  • Excellent communication skills necessary to promote positive collaborations with multiple disciplines within the college and across the university to include community partners and students.
  • Exhibit a passion for the liberal arts and the ability to articulate the value of a liberal arts education to external constituencies.
  • Experience in budgeting and acquisition of resources, preferably experience in responsibility centered budgeting.
