Application Instructions:

Employment History Include your last ten (10) years of employment history, or length of your employment history if less, including all positions (even those that are not relevant to this position) and periods of unemployment. Incomplete information could disqualify you from further consideration.

The laboratory of Professor Christian Metallo, PhD is seeking an experienced and motivated research assistant to be a part of a multi-disciplinary team working to characterize how metabolic reprogramming contributes to cancer, neuropathy, and other pathologies. The successful candidate will support maintenance and operation of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) systems for metabolomics analysis of cell, organoid, and tissue samples. The candidate will also develop analytical assays for stable isotope quantitation and assist senior scientists in operation and maintenance of LC-MS/MS systems within the lab. More generally, the candidate will interact with biologists, biochemists, and bioengineers in applying stable isotope tracing and metabolic flux analysis to these systems while working to develop computational pipelines to facilitate data analysis.

Numerous opportunities for personal and scientific growth and development will be provided in the areas of cell metabolism and biochemical engineering.

Research Support (75%):

  • Maintenance and operational management of gas chromatography-mass spectrometers (GC-MS) for metabolomics studies
  • Develop new analytical assays for quantitation of metabolites and lipids
  • Build and maintain lab databases for integrative analysis of metabolomics data
  • Manage equipment scheduling and ensure adequate supplies available for MS work
  • Process of samples to extract metabolites and lipids for MS analysis
  • Coordinate experiments amongst the team

Lab Support (25%):

  • Maintain and organize lab protocols and operating procedures
  • Oversee recordkeeping, scheduling and inventory of mass spectrometry operations
  • Analyze data from metabolomics and lipidomics studies
  • Maintaining laboratory safety and training records

Experience with gas or liquid chromatography and single quad mass spectrometry or related analytical chemistry equipment. An interest in learning metabolic tracing and pathway analysis.

Experience with mass spectrometry as well as data analysis using Graphpad Prism.

Bachelor's degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, or related field or equivalent work experience

A master's degree in biology or related field

  • Ability to research information and analyze data as well as follow verbal and/or written protocols, including follow-up on previously initiated procedures
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Ability to accurately record data in lab notebook and perform data entry using both PC and Mac operating systems. Use of commonly used software and tools, such as Microsoft office
  • Must be highly organized, effective at multitasking, and adept at juggling changing priorities
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with diverse groups

  • Prior experience in biochemistry or metabolism
  • Prior experience performing animal studies

  • Must be willing to work in an animal-related research environment.
  • Must be willing to complete occasional duties on weekends and holidays, and to work an adjusted schedule to support research needs.
