POSITION SUMMARY

The laboratory of Professor Christian Metallo, PhD is seeking an experienced and motivated research assistant to be a part of a multi-disciplinary team working to characterize how metabolic reprogramming contributes to cancer, neuropathy, and other pathologies. The successful candidate will support stem cell, organoid, and animal studies for investigation of metabolic alterations in the contexts of cancer and neurodegeneration. The candidate will collaborate with biologists, biochemists, and bioengineers in applying stable isotope tracing and metabolic flux analysis to these systems and assist in identifying and validating therapeutic strategies in cancer, peripheral neuropathy, and macular disease. In addition, the candidate will assist in daily operation of the lab and record keeping. Numerous opportunities for personal and scientific growth and development will be provided in the areas of cell metabolism and biochemical engineering.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Research Support - (70%):

  • Basic tissue culture and molecular biology experiments
  • Stem cell differentiation and organoid culture
  • Basic animal handling, including administration of doses, sample collection, and tissue isolation
  • Performing survival surgeries to support physiology studies
  • Coordinating animal care with animal core facility staff

Lab Support (30%):

  • Maintain and organize lab protocols, operating procedures, and organization
  • Coordinate and train junior technicians
  • Maintain laboratory safety and training records
  • Participate in regular laboratory meetings

EXPERIENCE

Required

A minimum of 2 years of experience as a lab technician or equivalent related combination of education and experience. Experience with animal handling, tissue culture, and general lab maintenance, including maintenance of a sterile environment.

Preferred

Experience with stem cell culture, molecular biology, or fluorescence microscopy.

EDUCATION

Required

Bachelor's degree in life sciences, biochemistry, engineering, or related field or equivalent work experience

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Required

  • Ability to research information and analyze data as well as follow verbal and/or written protocols, including follow-up on previously initiated procedures
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Ability to accurately record data in lab notebook and perform data entry using both PC and Mac operating systems. Use of commonly used software and tools, such as Microsoft office
  • Must be highly organized, effective at multitasking, and adept at juggling changing priorities
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with diverse groups

Preferred

  • Prior experience in biochemistry or metabolism
  • Prior experience performing animal studies

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Must be willing to work in an animal-related research environment.
  • Must be willing to complete occasional duties on weekends and holidays, and to work an adjusted schedule to support research needs.
  • Must pass background investigation.
  • Must be willing to sign confidentiality agreement.
