Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS)
Estuarine and Coastal Numerical Modelling
The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS)/William & Mary’s School of Marine Science invites applications for a full-time, tenure-eligible Associate/Full Professor. The position will begin in Summer 2022.
Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be expected to lead an active research program that is externally well-funded, teach core and advanced courses, advise students (primarily at the graduate level), participate in university and VIMS/SMS governance, and provide advisory service on related resource management issues important to the Commonwealth of Virginia. This position will be expected to develop a teaching program that meets the needs of VIMS’ graduate student population.
About the Virginia Institute of Marine Science: Chartered in 1940, the Virginia Institute of Marine Science is currently among the largest marine research and education centers in the United States. VIMS has a three-part mission to conduct interdisciplinary research in coastal ocean and estuarine science, educate students and citizens, and provide advisory service to policy makers, industry, and the public. The School of Marine Science at VIMS is William & Mary’s graduate school in marine science. VIMS currently employs 53 full-time faculty members and 300 staff, and has 95 graduate students in master’s and doctoral programs. There are four academic departments at VIMS: Aquatic Health, Biological, Fisheries, and Physical Sciences. Further information on VIMS and the School of Marine Science may be accessed at: www.vims.edu.
Qualifications: The successful candidate holds an earned doctorate (Ph.D.) or an equivalent degree in a field applicable to marine science. The candidate should demonstrate an established funding record, have a strong scholarship record commensurate with experience, a demonstrated ability to sustain an active research program, potential for excellence in teaching and mentoring students, and strong communication skills. We are seeking candidates who share VIMS’ commitment to the principle that diversity and inclusion are critical to maintaining excellence. The candidate should demonstrate excellence in the development of numerical modelling capabilities for coastal and estuarine environments, and ideally the application of coupled bio-physical models at multiple scales to inform coastal issues, important to the Commonwealth of Virgina and Chesapeake Bay. The successful candidate will be poised to take advantage of opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations that abound at VIMS, such as investigating hydrodynamic effects on biological, chemical, and geological processes. Additionally, the appointment will afford the successful candidate with access to VIMS and William & Mary’s High-Performance Computing (HPC) capabilities.
Application materials for the position should include: 1) a cover letter describing professional education, experience, and suitability for the position; 2) a full curriculum vitae; 3) a statement on research interests and teaching philosophy and how the applicant’s background, experience and vision fit in an institution that is fully committed to diversity and inclusion (3 pages maximum), and 4) the names (including title and institution) and contact information (address, email address, phone number) of five references.
Application materials should be addressed to: Search Committee Chair, Estuarine and Coastal Numerical Modelling, and will be accepted through our On-Line Application System at https://jobs.wm.edu/postings/46815. Application materials are due April 18, 2022 for full consideration. Applications received after that due date will be considered if needed.
