Job Description:

Raritan Valley Community College has an anticipated opening for an Academic Advisor. 

Responsible for advising new, returning, incoming transfer and continuing students regarding academic planning, course selection, career exploration, choice of major, transfer options, and other areas as needed.  Focus on student retention and supporting students in overcoming barriers that might hinder their path to graduation. 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

Advise students on academic planning, course selection, career exploration, choice of major, academic standards, educational strategies, transfer information and other areas as needed.

Work as part of a team to support the strategic goals of both the Advising & Counseling Office and RVCC, including ensuring all students have an academic and career plan.

Actively participate in student orientation programming/events.

Support the activities of Admissions and Recruitment.

Serve as a liaison to specific academic departments and serve on College-wide committees as needed.

Maintain accurate and current knowledge of degree and certificate programs of study, academic policies and operations, and College rules and procedures while maintaining security of student records and correspondence with appropriately strict confidentiality.

Make informed professional judgments regarding student referral to personal counselors, financial aid, career planning and other campus services.

Perform other related duties, as assigned.

 

Preferred and Required Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Psychology, Sociology, Human Services or related field. 
  • Minimum 3 years of experience working directly with college students, preferably in a Student Services setting.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to present to large groups. High degree of reliability and flexibility; ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-cultural environment.
  • Strong commitment to the mission of a comprehensive community college.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Counseling, Education, or Higher Education Administration.
  • 5 or more years higher education experience; including 3 years in a Student Services setting.
  • Prior work experience in community college.
  • Prior mental health experience.
  • Fluency in a second language.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of computerized record maintenance and management system, preferably BANNER.

Additional Information:

Work Hours:

  • Monday-Thursday from 8:30-6:00pm and Friday 8:30-5:00pm with additional hours during peak times. Ability to work at least one night until 6:00pm. 

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires sitting, standing, bending, walking, and climbing.
  • Lift and carry items weighing up to 20 pounds for a distance of up to 50 feet.
  • Requires handling equipment weighing up to 20 pounds while pushing, pulling, lifting, twisting, and reaching while lifting.
