Career and Internship Advisor, Tobin College of Business

Job Summary:

The Career and Internship Advisor for the Tobin College of Business (TCB) serves as a liaison between industry, faculty, alumni, and students within TCB and Career Services. The advisor will provide career coaching and facilitated learning sessions through group and individual advisement that ensures students' career readiness. They understand industry workforce needs and assist students to identify appropriate employment opportunities. The adviser will develop initiatives, faculty relationships and programs that seek to deliver career education across all TCB target populations. The advisor will contribute to the career readiness of St. John’s University students, providing equitable access to career education for all students, and supporting the overall effectiveness of the Career Services department and the Division of Student Affairs.

Essential Functions:

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The description of the task should include the intended result or outcome, e.g. compiles monthly reports to allow monitoring of the department’s budget.

    Acquire and maintain an intimate knowledge of TCB programs and pedagogy to provide intentional career programming, resources and advisement to selected populations.

    Collaborate closely with college faculty, departments, student groups, and alumni to develop and lead both foundational training and customized career-related programs.

    Maximize career resources available for students across St. John’s colleges and campuses, as a member of the centralized University Career Services team.

    Provide comprehensive individual and group advisement to target population(s) for students and alumni.

    Actively contribute to the recruitment process through student preparation and the utilization of technology to meet student and employer needs.

    Facilitate advanced level career development workshops and programming for graduate level students and other targeted groups.

    Contribute to the selection or development of career planning and job search resources to enhance students’ career preparedness.

    Remain informed of national, state and local hiring practices, guidelines, and labor related issues.

    Assist students to develop career decision making skills, utilizing career assessment tools when appropriate.

    Foster a productive and inclusive environment that encourages student enrollment, retention, persistence, and positive outcomes.
    Support the mission and strategic priorities of the University.


Preferred and Required Qualifications


    Excellent resume, interviewing and job search skills required.
    Must be collaborative, self-directed, outcome oriented, and able and willing to work under pressure with frequent interruptions. Possess strong customer service focus for internal and external constituents and success working both independently and in cross-functional teams.
    Demonstrate innovative approaches that empower students to successfully navigate the journey from college to career.
    Must have familiarity of employment and industry trends.
    Proficient in the use of web-based software. Proficiency with MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel required.
    Strong oral and written communication skills, experience teaching, training or facilitating workshops. Ability to develop and deliver effective presentations to groups.

Supervisory responsibilities: N/A

Required Education and Experience:

    Minimum of three to five years of experience in career services, human resources, career coaching, corporate recruiting/business development, or related field. Proven success in developing and maintaining internal and external relationships.
    Bachelor's Degree Required.

Preferred Education and Experience:

    Master’s degree
    Familiarity with higher education
    Experience with on-campus recruitment
    Proficiency with social media as a recruitment tool
    Knowledge of Handshake and Banner
    Familiarity with faith-based organizations

Work Environment

This position operates in a professional office environment; This position is required to use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, etc. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; move about; sit; to carry work and reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; communicate. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 10 lbs.
