The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has a full-time opening for a Research Associate in the Division of Reproductive Sciences. This individual will conduct research focused on cellular, molecular, and genetic mechanisms underlying human placental angiogenesis and development, with a primary focus on severe, early-onset fetal growth restriction. In addition to the primary responsibilities of designing, performing, and trouble-shooting experiments that are focused on hypothesis-driven queries, this individual will also be expected to demonstrate excellence in scientific writing of abstracts and manuscripts, to be able to generate new avenues of inquiry related to the lab’s primary scientific focus, and to train and supervise more junior lab members.

Successful applicants will need to demonstrate:

• A strong work ethic
• An ability to work both independently and collaboratively
• Willingness and aptitude in mentoring trainees of varying levels of experience (ranging from undergraduate, masters, graduate students to clinical fellows and other post-doctoral research fellows)
• Initiative to learn and develop novel methodologies/models
• Meticulous and detail-oriented technical skills, record-keeping, and scientific/statistical analyses
• Excellent communication skills with all members of the lab and collaborators
• Excellent skills in scientific writing (abstracts, manuscripts)

Please note that this position specifically also requires the applicant to have flexibility in work hours to include some nights and weekends.

Specific Position Duties with percentages of time

• Research (80%)
  • Designing and performing experiments in a methodical, scientific manner using advanced biomedical research techniques
  • Developing and validating new methodologies/applications
  • Writing full-length, high-quality scientific publications
  • Presenting research at national and international scientific meetings
• Teaching (15%)
  • Train/teach/supervise students, professional research assistants, and other lab members
• Administrative (5%)
  • Organization and coordination of laboratory functionality

Knowledge & Skills 

• Excellent communication and organizational skills
• Competence and facility with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint
• Ability to work independently yet collaboratively
• A strong work ethic and a commitment to being a team player in the lab and advancing knowledge in the field
• Willingness to develop and validate new methodologies/models
• Careful and methodical work practices with meticulous lab research documentation
• Excellent skills in scientific writing
• Appropriate knowledge of basic statistics and facility with standard statistical programs such as GraphPad Prism
• Flexible work schedule, including weekends and some nights, as required for completion of study goals

Salary and Benefits

Salary has been established at $52,000 - $62,000.  The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

• PhD in relevant scientific area such as Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, or Reproductive Biology with at least an additional five years of post-doctoral or additional bench research experience
• Relevant technical skills, including solid foundational experience with primary cell isolation/culture and routine laboratory experiments such as performance and analysis of real-time PCR, western blotting, biochemical assays, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence (confocal, TIRF), flow cytometry, EIAs, cloning, gene transfection/transduction studies, generation of viral constructs

Preferred Qualifications

• Background in (1) Placental/pregnancy biology, (2) Angiogenesis, and/or (3) Cell-microenvironment interactions
• Expertise in primary cell isolation and maintenance, preferably from the human placenta
• Expertise in advanced 3D in vitro techniques such as spheroids and/or organoids
• Expertise with advanced cellular imaging techniques, including live-cell imaging
• Expertise with several types of angiogenesis assays and analyses
