The School of Medicine’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has an opening for a full time University Staff (unclassified) Research Services Laboratory Sciences Professional (Intermediate, Senior, or Principal Level) in the Division of Reproductive Sciences.

Jobs in the Research Services career family provide direct professional support of research activities.  Functions include contracts and grants solicitation and administration, grant/agreement preparation, review and negotiation, regulatory compliance, sponsor communication and post and pre award management, human subject compliance, research animal management, research laboratory coordination and instruction, environmental health and safety, radiation control, hazardous materials use, disposal, and training.

Professionals at all levels are responsible for exercising discretion, analytical skill, personal accountability, and responsibility in a wide range of areas including academic, administrative, managerial and student services functions. Work involves creating, integrating, applying, and sharing knowledge directly related to a professional field. At the intermediate level, duties are less limited in scope and are performed independently with occasional guidance and direction from other professionals. At the senior level, work is performed fully independently. At the principal level, work is performed at an advanced or expert level. Principal Professionals are either work leads over others or are considered a subject matter expert in a particular area.

 

Nature of Work

Laboratory Science Professionals perform duties in an experimental lab, or wet lab, and handle a variety of chemicals and/or potential “wet” hazards. Laboratory Science Professionals perform duties in laboratories where chemicals, drugs, or other materials or biological matters are tested and analyzed.

 

Principal Laboratory Science Professionals either act as work/team leads for 2 or more FTE Professionals or are the subject matter experts (SME) in a particular area. SMEs possess a deep knowledge and oversight of a specific process, function and/or technology. SMEs are considered an authority in the area and are educated on the subject and are also able to share their knowledge with other stakeholders. Some Assignments will not move beyond the Senior or Principal levels.

 

We are seeking a Research Services Laboratory Science Professional with substantial laboratory research experience to join our growing laboratory.  This individual will conduct research focused on biochemical, cellular, and molecular mechanisms underlying human placental angiogenesis and development, with a primary focus on severe, early-onset fetal growth restriction. This person’s primary responsibility will be to design, perform, and trouble-shoot experiments that are focused on hypothesis-driven queries. Additionally, this individual will manage key aspects of the laboratory, including maintenance of our specimen repository, helping to train more junior lab members, and assisting the principal investigator in maintenance of daily laboratory functionality.

Successful applicants will need to demonstrate:

  • A strong work ethic
  • An ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Willingness and aptitude in mentoring trainees of varying levels of experience (ranging from undergraduate, masters, graduate students to clinical fellows and other post-doctoral research fellows)
  • Initiative to learn and develop novel methodologies/models
  • Meticulous and detail-oriented technical skills, record-keeping, and scientific/statistical analyses
  • Excellent communication skills with all members of the lab and collaborators

              Please note that this position requires flexible work hours, including occasional nights and weekends, as required for completion of study aims.

Examples of Duties Performed

Intermediate Level:

  • Collaborate with and support Principal Investigators (PI) and other stakeholders with laboratory and research functions
  • Utilize a variety of laboratory techniques required for research projects
  • Perform experiments and tabulate and analyze research
  • Support analytical testing process using standard lab support knowledge in the collection and review of conditions, including preserving samples, completing sample preparation, documenting, and communicating results
  • Perform pre-analytical, analytical and post analytical test process and evaluate results produced
  • Prepare lab for daily operations, including stocking materials, equipment, safety, cleanliness, and related areas
  • Provide animal care related to research studies, as necessary
  • Pick up, transport, and maintain results, samples, documents, materials, and other items as needed
  • Dispose of laboratory materials and samples using well established guidelines and instructions
  • Review, complete and process logs, documents, databases, and related materials and information
  • Provide support researching issues and developing recommendations to resolve process, unit, and related issues
  • Review and implement lab support policies, practices, and programs to meet organizational, operations and management needs
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations; receive guidance and direction or escalate when required
  • Independently and creatively identify laboratory solutions
  • Independently Review, develop, and implement new or modified laboratory techniques required for research projects
  • Assist Team Leads, Supervisors and/or management with creation and implementation of processes and procedures and quality improvement initiatives
  • Assist and train junior team members

Senior Level, all the above and:

  • Assist with developing or develop protocol-specific systems and documents including process flows, training manuals, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Maintains subject level documentation and prepares documents, equipment and/or supplies
  • Assist with identifying issues related to operational efficiency and shares results with leadership
  • Provide laboratory science expertise and leadership in study design, study oversight, data management, data analysis and manuscript preparation to assist all levels of investigators, researchers, and clinicians on new research activities across a wide range of disciplines
  • Serve as a resource to PIs and other stakeholders

Principal Level, all the above and:

  • Oversee and provide informal leadership to the team members, including managing day-to-day priorities, evaluating, and redistributing workloads on a temporary basis, and mentoring staff
  • Provide input and feedback to leadership on team members’ overall performance, performance evaluations, opportunities for development, and process improvement initiatives
  • Identify training and development opportunities for new and existing team members

 

Specific Position Duties with percentages of time:

  • Research (80%)
    • Collaborating and supporting the PI and other lab members with lab and research functions
    • Designing and performing experiments in a methodical, scientific manner using advanced biomedical research techniques
    • Developing and validating new methodologies/applications
    • Identifying and helping to implement new processes, procedures, and quality improvement initiatives
  • Teaching (15%)
    • Teach/supervise students, more junior professional research assistants, and other lab members
  • Administrative (5%)
    • Maintaining specimen repository and documentation
    • Coordination for specimen pick-up with the clinical research team
  • Ensuring compliance with institutional lab policies

Salary and Benefits

  • Intermediate Level: $36,000 – $45,792
  • Senior Professional: $37,000 - $47,064
  • Principal Professional: $38,000 – 48,336

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

  • Relevant technical laboratory skills, including familiarity and comfort with primary cell culture and routine laboratory experiments such as performance and analysis of real-time PCR, western blotting, biochemical assays, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, flow cytometry, EIAs, gene transfection/transduction studies, generation of viral constructs
  • Proficient to expert knowledge of laboratory techniques including safety procedures and techniques
  • Proficient to expert ability to analyze and solve complex problems
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution
  • Outstanding customer service skills

  • Background in human placental and pregnancy biology

  • Prior experimental background with cell-microenvironment interactions
  • Prior experience with 3D in vitro models
  • Prior experience with advanced cellular imaging techniques, including live-cell imaging
  • Knowledge of basic statistics and facility with standard statistical programs such as GraphPad Prism
  • Strong scientific writing skills
