University of Alberta
VPRI China Institute
Director, China Institute

Competition No. - A100147470
Closing Date - Will remain open until filled.

The University of Alberta is seeking a Director for the China Institute (CIUA) who will develop a vision and continue to lead its strategic growth into one of the top ten China Institutes in the world.

CIUA is an intellectual and policy leader. With an endowment of $37M and the capacity to fundraise and leverage significant additional resources, the China Institute in Alberta is in a fortuitous position. CIUA is a hub for research on connections, junctures, and relationships that are forming between China, Alberta and Canada, attracting a dynamic community of scholars. These scholars cluster into interdisciplinary and collaborative groups which analyze and identify the nature of the past, current, and future relationships between the two cultures and governments. CIUA will provide the best thinking on the future of China, specifically in policy areas where the University of Alberta and Alberta have a competitive advantage by virtue of strategic assets and expertise. These could include energy, environment, agriculture, science and technology, and higher education.

For more information about the China Institute, please see www.china.ualberta.ca

The candidate must possess a proven track record as an eminent international scholar in a field relevant to Chinese studies and at a level commensurate with appointment at the senior academic rank. Alternatively, individuals who have had a high-profile and successful China-centered career in public service will also be considered. While a degree is required, the focus will be on the candidate's experience as this challenging role demands significant experience working with Chinese universities, organizations, and/or agencies; a strong public presence – articulate, passionate, energetic, and highly visible – with the ability to motivate and inspire others to support and participate in the initiatives of the Institute; demonstrated understanding of a broad range of disciplines, the business world, international collaboration, and the effect China will have on the future of Alberta and Canada; and an extensive network of contacts in China and internationally; and fluency in a Chinese language, preferably Mandarin.

The Director will also be expected to develop a dynamic vision which engages industry, governments, and other academic institutions in its activities. The Director will be responsible for developing the scholarly mission as well as academic collaborations across the University of Alberta campus, and with leading universities across the world engaged in China studies, including Chinese universities. The Director will lead in the development of world-class research programs and advance the University of Alberta's reputation for excellence in research, scholarship and policy on China and for collaborative research with international institutions and scholars. The Director will provide advice to the President on strategic issues and report to the Vice-President (Research and Innovation) on operational issues. The Director will also be expected to lead fundraising efforts, with the support of the Development team, with the aim of increasing the endowment of the China Institute.

The University of Alberta in Edmonton is one of the top teaching and research universities in Canada, with an international reputation for excellence across the humanities, sciences, creative arts, business, engineering, and health sciences. It offers more 700 undergraduate and graduate programs in 18 faculties across five campuses.
