FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

Brooklyn College, a senior College of the City University of New York (CUNY), invites applications for a Lecturer in Organic Chemistry or Biochemistry in the Department of Chemistry within the School of Natural and Behavioral Sciences with a starting date in August 2022. Lecturers are eligible for a certificate of continuous employment (CCE) upon the sixth reappointment in the title that follows five years of continuous service in the title.

The Department of Chemistry is home to 17 full-time faculty and six full-time laboratory technicians who are committed to equipping students with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in their professional careers.  The department places a high premium on supporting students from minority groups under-represented in the sciences, and recently won an award from the American Chemical Society in recognition of these efforts.

The successful applicant will possess at least a Bachelor's degree in chemistry, STEM education, or a related field; a Master’s or doctoral-level degree in one of these fields is preferred. The applicant will also have experience teaching organic chemistry and/or biochemistry at the undergraduate level and will be committed to excellence in pedagogy and in student retention.  The preferred candidate will be able to make contributions in both organic chemistry and biochemistry, though it is understood that their strength may be greater in one area than the other, and instructional assignments in other areas of chemistry are possible.  A priority for the department is the development of programs and resources to support student retention, and the successful applicant will be prepared to play a leading role in addressing these challenges. 

The School of Natural and Behavioral Sciences offers both undergraduate and graduate degree programs through its nine departments – Anthropology and Archaeology, Biology, Chemistry, Computer and Information Science, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Health and Nutrition Sciences, Math, Physics, and Psychology.

Responsibilities include:

• Teaching and developing curricula for undergraduate and graduate courses
• Developing programs and resources supporting student success and retention in organic chemistry.
• Sharing responsibility for committee and department assignments, performing administrative, supervisory, and other related functions.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelors in Chemistry, STEM education, or a related field required
• Masters or Ph.D. in Chemistry, STEM education, or a related field preferred
• Demonstrated potential for effective teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels

COMPENSATION

Salary commensurate with experience and credentials at the entry level. All appointments are subject to financial availability.
