Kent State University’s School of Media and Journalism invites applications for the Knight Chair in Scholastic Journalism for an appointment to begin in August 2022.

The School of Media and Journalism (MDJ) is a national leader in scholastic journalism, offering graduate training for high school teachers, school media advisers and media professionals seeking a transition to teaching in the post-secondary space. Home to the Center for Scholastic Journalism, MDJ is proud to host one of just 26 endowed Knight chairs and professors nationwide.

The Knight Chair in Scholastic Journalism will be a dynamic, student-focused individual with a commitment to the First Amendment, media literacy, diversity and inclusion, and dedication to the future of journalism. The candidate will be expected to further advance the national and international reputation of Kent State’s scholastic journalism program, as well as encourage and spark the next generation of journalists and storytellers from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

Supported by an endowment of nearly $2 million, the Knight Chair in Scholastic Journalism will teach undergraduate and graduate courses, including those in our master’s program focused on journalism education. The successful candidate will participate in research and/or creative activity in their area of expertise and will be highly engaged in community efforts connected to scholastic journalism and journalism education.


Preferred and Required Qualifications

Candidates should possess credentials to be hired as a full professor with tenure. This could include an undergraduate degree with significant professional experience or a terminal degree with a relevant research agenda. Candidates must demonstrate a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion.
