Job Description

Application Instructions:

Employment History Include your last ten (10) years of employment history, or length of your employment history if less, including all positions (even those that are not relevant to this position) and periods of unemployment. Incomplete information could disqualify you from further consideration.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Research Scientist will perform mass spectrometry-based metabolomics and lipidomics to understand the mechanistic drivers of neurological disorders and cancer associated with dysregulated amino acid metabolism. These studies will involve targeted analytics of clinical samples, animal tissues, and organoid models as well as metabolic flux studies using stable isotope tracers (e.g. 13C, 15N, 2H). The Research Scientist will execute these analyses with the support of technical staff and scientists in the Metallo lab and interact with collaborating scientists and clinicians to advance our understanding of metabolic dysfunction in cancer, macular telangiectasia, and neurodegenerative disorders. The successful applicant will design innovative analytical strategies for patient diagnosis and mechanistic interventions for cancer and neurodegenerative disorders associated with metabolic dysfunction, working as part of a dynamic and multi-disciplinary team within a newly constructed physiology and mass spectrometry laboratory.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

(100%) Research Scientist

  • Independently perform mass spectrometry-based metabolomics and lipidomics analyses using gas and liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry.
  • Design and execute stable isotope tracing, metabolomics and lipidomics assays, including new technologies, according to the research goals, with critical evaluation of research results.
  • Collect and organize high-resolution mass spectrometry data and conduct statistical analyses for interpretation.
  • Work collaboratively with scientists and trainees to metabolic assays and interventions in the most relevant biological systems.
  • Prepare documents, figures, and supporting materials for scientific presentations, publications, and research proposals.
  • Examine and interpret scientific literature, content of web sites, and other scientific resources to maintain cutting edge research studies.

EXPERIENCE

Required:

  • Minimum three years of related post PhD/MD research experience or equivalent.
  • Strong background in analytical chemistry and mass spectrometry-based metabolomics or lipidomics
  • Experience in the design, optimization, and implementation of targeted metabolomics assays
  • Experience analyzing and interpreting high-resolution mass spectrometry data
  • Multiple publications in peer-reviewed journals, including first author publications.

Preferred:

  • Experience with stable isotope tracing or metabolic flux analysis
  • Experience with computational platforms such as R, Matlab, Python or equivalent.

Education & Major:

Required:

  • PhD degree in Biochemistry or a related field.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Required:

  • Theoretical and hands on knowledge of liquid chromatography and high-resolution mass spectrometry.
  • Ability to perform highly complex experiments and techniques with high levels of reliability and accuracy within time constraints.
  • Strong presentation and critical thinking skills.
  • Proficient in advanced techniques with relevant software: Excel, PowerPoint, Word, etc. in addition to experience working within shared work environments and communication platforms: Slack, Zoom, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research. This includes the ability to (a) develop, maintain, execute, and complete research projects; and (b) perform basic data and statistical analysis.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in researching metabolism and analyzing data to arrive at valid conclusions, recommendations, and plans of action.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Must be willing to work in an animal-related research environment.
  • Must be willing to work an adjusted schedule to support research needs.
  • Satisfactory completion of the Institute's background investigation.
  • Must be willing to sign a confidentiality agreement.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/MENTAL ACTIVITIES/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
