Job Description

 

The next chair will:

  • Establish a vision, tactical strategy, and business model with the appropriate operating infrastructure to ensure clinical operations are effective, service oriented, and efficient.
  • Develop, maintain, and expand high-quality clinical services and programs at Banner – University Medicine-affiliated teaching hospitals and clinics to position the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery for recognition as the premier market leader and provider of orthopaedic surgery services in the region.
  • Meet strategic goals, this leader will promote professional development of existing faculty members and attract to the department highly motivated and exceptional faculty, staff, and trainees.
  • Coach, mentor, and nurture faculty to build internal leadership capabilities for succession.
  • Nurture and develop the next generation of academic physician and allied medical specialty leadership in the department.
  • Foster a culture of interdisciplinary research through collaboration with departments, colleges and centers, and develop an infrastructure that enhances research innovation and productivity.
  • Establish effective communication channels with faculty, staff, and administration, that result in trust, strategic alignment, and collaborative working relationships in the pursuit of improved departmental cohesion and team environment.
  • Develop key institutional partnerships and strategic relationships and define and pursue interdisciplinary clinical and research goals that align with the university, health sciences, the College of Medicine, and Banner Health strategic goals.
  • Create, implement, and maintain defined standard objectives for clinical operations, quality outcomes, patient access, financial targets, and volume growth.
  • Oversee departmental budgeting and resource management, meet departmental financial goals, and enact policies and processes that promote fiscal accountability and responsibility.
  • Ensure an excellent teaching program for the students, residents, and fellows who receive education and training within the department. Identify new, and expand existing, sources of funding, including extramural clinical and translational research grants, philanthropy, and clinical revenue.
  • Develop connections in the region to enhance the clinical operations and ensure a high-value experience for patients and referring providers.
  • Monitor and consistently work to improve clinical quality.
  • Ensure implementation of university policies pertaining to faculty governance and evaluation and make diversity, equity, inclusion, and accountability priorities in leading the department through inclusive excellence.
  • Be accountable for compliance with Joint Commission standards, federal and state accreditation requirements, and university and college policies and procedures.


The successful candidate will be an outstanding clinical and academic leader with an established track record of leadership and program building, who is recognized and well-respected by local, regional, and national peers, with strengths and accomplishments as a clinician, physician-scientist, and/or physician-educator. They will have a passion for developing unique models of care delivery and prevention initiatives and possess a desire to build systems and processes to maximize efficiency. The chair will engage faculty, mentor their careers, hold them accountable to agreed-upon objectives, and create a collaborative environment conducive to camaraderie, excellent clinical care, research, education, and service.

Preferred and Required Qualifications

Qualified candidates must hold an MD, DO, MD/PhD or equivalent degrees from an accredited institution, be board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, be eligible for medical licensure in Arizona, demonstrate successful leadership achievements in a large volume, high-performing, contemporary department within a health system with comparable complexity to UArizona/Banner Health, and preferably meet UArizona criteria for appointment to a tenured / tenure-eligible senior level faculty position.
