HD CERC Social Worker, HDSA Center of Excellence – Georgetown University Medical Center


Georgetown’s Huntington's Disease Care, Education and Research Center (HD CERC) is designated as a “Center of Excellence” by the Huntington’s Disease Society of America (HDSA).


The HD CERC Social Worker, central to the HD Center Mission of “Cura Familia,” plays an integral role in ensuring our patient population receives the best care possible. In addition to facilitating direct clinical care and support, they assist in the coordination of recruitment and retention of Clinical Trials participants, as well as the management of the Center’s operational activities of HDSA Center of Excellence at Georgetown University.  The HD CERC Social Worker provides consultation and teaching functions for the patients and their families as well as for the community, and connects all aspects of a patient care.


Reporting to the Clinical Director of Operations, and supervising HD CERC social work interns, the HD CERC Social Worker has duties that include but are not limited to:


Oversee Outreach Efforts to Broader HD Community

  • Facilitates referrals to the HD Center from outside providers.
  • Schedules, plans, and directs support groups online or in person.
  • Schedules, plans, and leads education programs for the HD community.
  • Schedules, plans, and leads educational programs for other clinicians to learn about HD.


Provide Support/information to HD Patients and Families

  • Serves as first line of contact by phone/email.
  • Screens new patients for clinic, genetic testing program.
  • Makes direct inquiries about care to other clinicians at the HD-CERC.
  • Provides social work expertise on disability forms and long term care placement.
  • Provides first call for patient emergencies.
  • Assists other clinicians with Adult Protective Service referrals.


Plan and Schedule Multidisciplinary Clinic

  • Schedules new and follow-up visits so patients can see multiple clinicians at one visit.
  • Follows up after clinic to ensure care plan implemented.
  • Schedules, plans, and directs multidisciplinary team meetings.


Write Grants for Position Support

  • Prepares yearly HDSA Center COE reports/funding renewal requests.
  • Seeks additional grant opportunities.
  • Writes grants to support educational and other outreach opportunities.

Preferred and Required Qualifications


  • At least 2 years of experience with Huntington’s disease OR at least 5 years of experience with Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, or other neurodegenerative disease
  • Experience in grant writing and seeking broader program funding


Preferred qualifications

  • Prior work with long term care placement
  • Some clinical trials experience/understanding of how to recruit subjects
  • Experience in multidisciplinary team work as a social worker
