This is a career-oriented, fully-benefitted, renewable appointment with a clear promotional pathway for applicants eager to work in an innovative environment.

The Multidisciplinary Design program brings together undergraduate students from all disciplines to tackle real life design challenges in project-based courses. As human-centered designers, we are committed to valuing and understanding the people at the core of our designs and strive for inclusive and equitable solutions. As researchers, engineers, and thinkers, we apply the theory learned in the classroom to create robust, implementable solutions.

This position will be responsible for the development and delivery of multidisciplinary design courses and will oversee design team projects. While this instructor will collaborate with faculty teaching existing design courses, they will also have the opportunity to build design courses according to their interests and the interests of our students. We are seeking a visionary who can join the existing Multidisciplinary Design team to craft the future of the design learning experience at Johns Hopkins. This position has potential for a secondary appointment in an engineering department.

Responsibilities include:

  • Developing and teaching human-centered design content
  • Mentoring project teams comprised of students from across both engineering and non-engineering disciplines
  • Student evaluation
  • Building community that fosters trust, openness to a diversity of thought, and inclusion of all students
  • Sourcing external projects from industry and maintaining partner relationships
  • Contributing to programmatic growth
  • Collaborating with faculty across departments to provide ABET evaluations of courses and encourage multidisciplinary offerings within departmental curricula.

Preferred and Required Qualifications

Preference will be given to applicants with the following characteristics:

  • Experience teaching and mentoring human-centered design in project-based learning environments
  • Professional experience in a design role in which human-centered or participatory design was practiced, such as a design engineer or design strategist.
  • Masters degree or higher in a design-related field, engineering preferred
