The Urban and Regional Planning program at the University of South Florida (USF) invites applications for a 9-month renewable appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor of Instruction or Assistant Instructor, beginning on August 7, 2022. The Urban and Regional Planning Program, housed in the School of Public Affairs, is a PAB- accredited master's program that has already built a strong reputation in the Tampa Bay region.

Candidates applying for this position should have a passion for planning education and be prepared to teach both core and elective courses in our graduate program, as well as classes for undergraduates. Our priority is to identify a candidate who can teach in the areas of environmental planning; sustainability and resilience; coastal planning and hazard mitigation, and/or climate change. We would also prefer a candidate who could offer experiential courses such as studios or service-learning classes. More information on our curriculum can be found here:

Our program emphasizes hands-on learning and partnerships with practitioners; as such we particularly encourage applications from those who have experience with and are excited by these sorts of collaborations.

The Urban and Regional Planning program is housed in the USF School of Public Affairs along with the USF Public Administration program, and the Florida Institute of Government. The school offers two master's degrees (MURP and MPA) and several graduate certificates, including those in Nonprofit Management, Coastal Management and Community Development. The school creates many exciting opportunities for our faculty, including the opportunity to work collaboratively with related programs in the internationally-recognized Patel College for Global Sustainability, the USF College of Marine Science, and the Florida Center for Community Design and Research.


Preferred and Required Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD in Urban and Regional planning or related field OR masters in Urban and Regional Planning or related field plus 5 years of experience in either higher education teaching or planning practice.
  • Demonstrated expertise in one or more of these areas: coastal planning; hazard mitigation; resilient/sustainable development; environmental policy and planning [Demonstrated expertise would mean course work, teaching experience or professional practice experience]
  • At least 1 semester of higher education teaching experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in Urban and Regional Planning or related field;
  • 4 semesters of higher education teaching experience;
  • Experience with studio, service learning, or other experiential learning methods;
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS, AutoCAD, and/or other tools used in professional planning practice;
  • Experience with university-community partnership building
