Job Description


The University of Bridgeport is seeking a Vice President for External Affairs.  The University of Bridgeport is a private, non-profit university located in Bridgeport, Connecticut.    

Reporting to The University of Bridgeport President, The Vice President for External Affairs serves as primary liaison with the university’s external stakeholders. Such stakeholders include, but are not limited to; local, state and federal government officials, quasi-government organizations, local chambers of commerce, business and industry associations, workforce development and community organizations.  The individual is responsible for devising and implementing the organization’s government-facing strategies and coordinating its related activities with campus leaders.  In addition, this individual would be responsible for directing the development, approval and monitoring of the university’s strategic plan.

As a member of the university’s executive leadership team, this individual will also ensure alignment between the president and institutional fundraising and development efforts.  Finally, this individual will work closely with the university Communications and Marketing department in coordinating strategic messaging to all external audiences.

The individual would oversee industry workforce development initiatives, the University's grant operations, community and government relations. The individual may represent the University on a variety of business related, community boards and committees such as BEDCO/BRBC, the MetroCOG, regional Economic Development committee, local Neighborhood Revitalization Zone and other strategic groups.

Key duties of this position include:

  • Create legislative strategy to identify and support or defeat, as necessary, local state and federal legislation/regulatory efforts deemed important to the university, its students, faculty, and staff.
  • Oversee and supervise the outside lobbying consultants that represent the university with local state and federal audiences. Assure the ethical compliance of the university and such consultants with applicable local, state and federal law.
  • Work closely with internal and external Communications resources to help develop and deliver university desired messaging and branding to local, state, and federal audiences.
  • Partner with the Senior Vice President of Economic & Strategic Development at Goodwin University to identify opportunities to advance the missions of both institutions through external affairs. 
  • Support new program development by coordinating necessary capital and program funding through public and private resources including working closely with federal and state agencies.
  • Other duties as assigned by the president


Preferred and Required Qualifications

Profile of the successful candidate:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; JD or related graduate degree desired.
  • High-level Congressional, Executive Branch, or related advocacy experience with a deep understanding of politics and policy change
  • Strategic management experience, including the ability to supervise highly skilled professionals and lead a team through coaching, mentorship, and collaboration.
  • Exceptional relationship-building skills, including the capacity to build support and momentum across a wide range of stakeholders
  • Ability to effectively serve as an external face of the institution,.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to fostering and maintaining a diverse, equitable and inclusive workplace.
  • Demonstrated diplomacy, relationship-building, and communications skills required to collaborate with both internal and external leaders and constituents at all levels.
  • Commitment to centering equity at every level – in individual workstyle, management, and with The Leadership Conference partners
  • Deep and principled commitment to civil rights
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, including the ability to produce finished work products
  • Strong legal research and analytical skills, including drafting and analyzing legislative language
