The University of Queensland (UQ) maintains a world class, comprehensive program of research, innovation, and research training. The Research and Innovation Portfolio supports the University's research community through strategic engagement with external stakeholders, funding organisations and research partners, international collaborations, grants management, research strategy, planning and performance, research infrastructure, higher degree research training and research ethics and integrity.

As a result of a recent review of the partnership function, a new role of Executive Director, Research Partnerships has been created. Reporting to the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and Innovation), this important leadership position will lead a step change in UQ's research partnership function to achieve the University's research partnership goals.

About This Opportunity

The Executive Director, Research Partnerships will be responsible for developing a strategic approach to the stewardship of UQ's research partnerships. This role will be critical in developing and overseeing the implementation of strategy and processes that develop and sustain research relationships in the interests of UQ and its partners. The Executive Director will lead major research partnership initiatives that involve industry and /or government partners ensuring that pathways to translation are attractive to potential industry partners and investors, while providing oversight and development of research collaborations, alliances, and consultancies in the interests of the University.

The key priorities for the Executive Director Research Partnerships in the initial stages are envisaged to be:

  • Consultation, development, and implementation of UQ's research partnerships and translation strategy.
  • Establishing critical across-UQ governance arrangements related to UQ's top tier strategic partners/alliances.
  • Developing a pipeline of new large scale partnerships/alliances in collaboration with Faculties and Institutes.

Our Ideal Candidate

UQ is looking for a highly experienced executive leader and deal broker who has worked at the intersection of research, relationships management and industry partnerships to join UQ's senior research and innovation leadership team.

The role requires exceptional relationship management and highly developed interpersonal skills to build and foster connections and partnerships with UQ academics, industry, and government. Relevant postgraduate qualifications and/or an equivalent combination of training and experience should be coupled with a demonstrated record of providing visionary and strategic leadership in building research partnerships and new alliances, while maximising performance, impact, and revenue in the face of scale and complexity.

This is a full-time, fixed term appointment for 5 years. An attractive remuneration package will be negotiated with the successful candidate. Remuneration will be subject to periodic review.
