Job Description

 

The Department of Cell & Systems Biology in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the field of biological data science with a focus on computational neuroscience. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2022.


We seek outstanding applicants with a track record of demonstrated excellence in applying computational approaches to address fundamental questions in neuroscience that will enhance and complement the strengths of the Department of Cell & Systems Biology in genomics, comparative genomics, chemical genomics, proteomics, and bioinformatics, and contribute to new initiatives such as the University of Toronto’s Data Science Institute and a professional MSc program in biological data science.   

The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in Biology or a related field (e.g., Neuroscience, Systems Biology, Genome Biology, Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, etc.), substantial postdoctoral experience (at least two years), and a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue vigorous, innovative, and independent internationally recognized research and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program. The successful candidate will also be expected to collaborate with neuroscience colleagues in the department and elsewhere to test computational hypotheses. Evidence of strong academic and/or industry collaboration will be considered an asset.

Evidence of excellence in research will be demonstrated by a record of publications in top-ranked and field relevant academic journals or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, evidence of peer-reviewed research funding, trainee mentorship, and strong endorsements by referees of high standing. Research excellence will be evaluated commensurate with the career stage of the candidate, taking into consideration the life, trajectory, and any special circumstances (e.g., career interruptions) as outlined in the submitted materials.

In addition, we expect excellence in teaching and a commitment to mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students. This will be demonstrated by strong endorsements from referees of top international stature, teaching experience and accomplishments highlighted as part of the application and a teaching dossier to include a statement of teaching philosophy, sample course materials and teaching evaluations.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
