Job Description


The VCU L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs, Public Administration Program invites applications for a Senior Practitioner in Residence.

The school is seeking an individual with a wealth of direct practitioner experience and knowledge in various areas of government and/or non-profit management to join our team with a flexible 2022 start date. The individual will complement and expand our existing expertise across the school and serve as an affiliate faculty in the field of Public Administration and show a commitment to high-quality instruction that can contribute to the strength and diversity of our program.

Successful candidates will join a dedicated group of colleagues with diverse interests and a demonstrated ability to teach effectively and conduct policy-relevant research with a strong commitment to service and community engagement. We are interested in someone who will demonstrate through teaching, creative expression, and/or public engagement, the richness of diversity in the learning experience through integrated intersectional approaches and perspectives.

This is a 12-month position with the option of full or part time employment.

Teaching (50%) – The successful candidate will join an accredited program (a recipient of the NASPAA Social Equity Award) and teach within the Masters of Public Administration core requirements of the graduate curriculum and may contribute to the Ph.D. in Public Policy and Administration and an introductory undergraduate course in government and public affairs. The individual will be involved both in-person and online course delivery, and demonstrate leadership in developing techniques to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests. The teaching load will be determined based on the percent effort of time.

Administrative (50%) – The successful candidate will be expected to engage in activities across the program, school and community that align with the mission and priorities. To work with the Center & Institute leadership to expand our contractual portfolio, networks and programming. To serve as a networking liaison with both internal and external stakeholders to enhance our efforts, for example, in student engagement, research opportunities, impact on the community and commitment to social justice.

Preferred and Required Qualifications

Required Qualifications

● Master’s degree in public administration, public policy or a related discipline.

● A minimum of 5 years of executive managerial/leadership experience at a local, state, national agency or non-profit.

● Evidence of effective instruction.

● Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as an employee at VCU.


Preferred Hiring Standards

● Ph.D. in public administration, public policy or a related discipline.

● More than 5 years of executive managerial/leadership experience at a local, state, national agency or non-profit.

● Policy relevant research that aligns with the mission of the Public Administration program.
