The Communications Specialist I, under general supervision, writes, edits, and assists in the production and design of informational and promotional materials.

This position is funded by a grant or restricted funds. Continued employment is contingent on the renewal of grant or restricted funding.


  • Draft, edit, and disseminate communications materials such as press releases, op-eds, blogs, feature stories, media advisories, scripts, public service announcements, e-newsletters, web site content, presentations, and other promotional materials as required. Contribute to university publications and website as needed
  • Conceptualize and create compelling content for websites, social media platforms, and marketing campaigns while adhering to university brand standards and website style guidelines
  • Ensure web content is up-to-date, accessible, and optimized to meet communications goals.
  • Assist in the development and execution of communications strategies designed to further the mission and goals of Healthy Houston
  • Assist in the planning and execution of special events and programs, including communications and logistical support
  • Prioritize projects from concept to review and completion while adhering to deadlines and working in an environment with changing priorities
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree mass communications, journalism, English, marketing, or a closely related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • No prior experience required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in AP Style
  • Strong attention to detail and proofreading skills
  • Basic design skills using platforms like Canva and Adobe
  • Ability to multitask with strong organizational and project management skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively
  • Fast, flexible, cooperative work style; ability to meet strict deadlines
  • Photography and videography skills a plus

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three (3) or more years of communications or marketing related experience
  • Demonstrated skills in writing and editing
  • Demonstrated success in implementing communication campaigns
  • Thorough knowledge of media operations
  • Experience with web design, photography, videography, and/or graphic design
  • Ability to adapt to emerging technologies
  • Good problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to work with collaboratively with student, faculty, staff and other stakeholders
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with colleagues that supports a cooperative work environment
