Financial Aid plays a significant role in our focus on increasing student access, success, retention, and graduation. The Specialist should be familiar with the challenges and barriers that community college students and their families face in preparing for college and is ready to help students overcome the obstacles in their path to postsecondary education.   Reports to Director of Financial Aid Essential Functions and Responsibilities -         Manage and mentor a caseload of assigned students through appreciative, positive, and responsive relationships- proactively monitoring student progress, intervening as necessary-         Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with students, parents, and families-         Provide service excellence through courteous, informed, accessible, and professional engagement-         Meet with students, parents, and families to assist, guide, and inform through the Financial Aid applications, processes, and awards-         Actively communicate with students regarding their Financial Aid using a variety of communication modes (email, phone call, text, in-person, and video conferencing)-         Provide basic information on Military Education Benefits-         Administer financial aid award procedures:o  Guide students through the verification processo  Comprehend, analyze, and process required documentation to validate student eligibilityo  Understand, implement, and communicate with students financial aid requirements, such as Satisfactory Academic Progresso  Process professional judgments and dependency overrides according to federal guidelineso  Use automated systems to assist in processingo  Sustain knowledge of multiple and ever-changing software programs mandated by state and federal agencies-         Assist the Director of Financial Aid with:o  Annual internal auditso  Illinois  Student Assistance Commission audito  Department of Education program reviewso  Maintaining and updating procedure manualso  Development of department procedures and processes-         Collaborate with MCC departments to clarify financial aid regulations and processes, partner on student-centered initiatives, and problem-solve student situations -         Assist with sharing Financial Aid information to various populations by making presentations and serving as a resource to high schools, community organizations, and other groups-         Attend training opportunities throughout the year, specific to Financial Aid regulations and processes-         Communicate tactfully while exercising extreme diplomacy, empathy, and compassion when dealing with sensitive information, challenging situations, difficult, and sometimes disgruntled individuals.-         Work collaboratively with others to accomplish functions and responsibilities-         Assume additional duties as assigned by immediate supervisorState Programs Focused Responsibilities:-         Create procedure, monitor, process, and reconcile student awards for the state of IL Alternative Applications-         Prepare and process the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) Monetary Award Program-         Lead training of students, employees, and stakeholders on financial aid processes, coordinate FAFSA workshops, and develop supplemental materials to assist in the promotion of FAFSA completion-         Coordinate outreach efforts for the state of IL Alternative Applications-         Support processes related to School Certifying Official requirements-         Support processes related to the technical aspects of the Financial Aid Office Required Education Associate's degree from a regionally accredited institution, or the equivalent combination of related training and education. Other Required Qualifications -         One year of related experience (e.g. working in an educational environment including relevant experience as an undergraduate or graduate student, serving students, etc.)  -         Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills Desired Qualifications -         Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution -         Bilingual communication skills (Spanish/English)-         Experience with computer software used for financial aid processing-         Experience in a higher education or community college setting Skills and Specifications -         Thorough understanding of applicable Financial Aid institutional, state, and federal guidelines and regulations-         Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite -         Ability to grow with the technology and philosophical directions implemented by the College-         Understanding importance of confidentiality-         Ability to speak in public-         Ability to work in a high-quality, focused service environment with excellent organizational skills and a professional manner-         Attention to detail-         Ability to work independently, yet have a strong team orientation and to develop productive working relationships at all levels of the organization-         Sensitivity to students whose cultural and educational experiences differ from his/her own-         Willingness and ability to work in a dynamic environment that requires being sensitive to change and responsive to changing goals, needs, and priorities-         Excellent interpersonal and communication skills-         Ability to work under pressure with composure-         Demonstrate excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills-         Commitment and respect for diversity, equity, inclusion, and the MCC Behaviors of Excellence-         Commitment to the College mission, vision, values, and goals -         Ability to perform all of the essential functions, skills, and specifications of the position Location Main Campus
