Job Description


The Office of Advancement builds lifelong relationships with alumni, parents, and friends, and engages them in support of Wesleyan’s educational mission and financial goals. Wesleyan University is currently in the quiet/leadership phase of a comprehensive fundraising campaign.

The Advancement team fosters pride in the Wesleyan community and develops support for university initiatives through outreach activities, including development/fundraising, alumni & parent relations, and both on- and off-campus events..

Reporting to the Associate Director of Annual Giving, the Assistant Director is responsible for managing the Wesleyan Fund fundraising efforts for multiple alumni classes, including Reunion year classes.

This will include coordinating the volunteer efforts of Class Agents and Reunion Committees ensuring that these volunteers have the resources needed to effectively solicit classmates for unrestricted gifts to the Wesleyan Fund.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Work with volunteers to draft multiple class-specific fundraising communications throughout the year.
  •  Identify, recruit and collaborate with alumni reunion chairs and reunion committees; lead the reunion team for each class and partner with colleagues in Major Gifts and Alumni and Parent Relations to develop a solicitation strategy for the class, encourage Reunion attendance and Fundraising.
  • Develop and cultivate relationships with an assigned portfolio of approximately 40-60 Wesleyan Fund prospects. Solicit these prospects and qualify them for potential as major gift donors.
  • Staff both on and off campus Wesleyan Fund and Office of Advancement events as needed. Limited evening and weekend work is required.
  • Collaborate with Office of Advancement colleagues in on-going engagement projects, including updating web-based content and advocating for innovative technical capabilities.
  • Other duties as assigned. 



Preferred and Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and one year direct or related experience in relationship management, sales, project management, or a customer service oriented role or an equivalent combination of education and related work experience.

Ability to work effectively with volunteers, colleagues and various constituencies nationally.

Proven ability to set goals and to develop strategies and timelines to complete projects and reach goals.

Excellent writing skills with the ability to synthesize information from a variety of sources.

Effective communication skills.

Demonstrated ability to create and deliver presentations.

Expertise with MS Word and Excel, Outlook and database programs.

Must be able to work a flexible schedule including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays as needed.

Demonstrated commitment to work within a diverse environment and interact collegially with individuals of different backgrounds.
