The Division of Biological Sciences (www.biology.ucsd.edu) seeks an outstanding educator for the position of Academic Coordinator II, who will serve as the Instructional Laboratory Program Administrator. All candidates must have earned a Ph.D., or equivalent degree, in Biology or related field and be committed to supporting teaching excellence at the undergraduate level. The Academic Coordinator series is an academic appointment. Appointees in this series are not members of the Academic Senate and the appointment does not lead to tenure. The Academic Coordinator provides formal supervision of the Instructional Lab Manager and indirectly supervises ten career staff employees. This position may be expected to teach undergraduate courses such as Introductory Biology Lab and Recombinant DNA Techniques, on occasion.

Candidates with high level administrative management experience and relevant university teaching experience are encouraged to apply. A successful candidate will have demonstrated expertise in developing and updating laboratory curricula that address the evolving needs of the life sciences curriculum; demonstrated excellence in academic administration; and a commitment to equity and inclusion in higher education. We are especially interested in candidates who have created or contributed to programs that aim to increase access and success of underrepresented students and/or faculty in the sciences, and/or have detailed plans to accomplish such goals.

Primary responsibilities of the Academic Coordinator include administration and management of the complex, high throughput year-round Instructional Lab Program in the Division of Biological Sciences and is significantly involved in the development and direction of the Divisional teaching lab program. The Academic Coordinator is responsible for developing and implementing programs as well as embodying principles that create and sustain a culture of inclusion and to support our collective goal of ensuring that students remain on a positive academic trajectory while enrolled at UC San Diego as Biology Majors.

The Academic Coordinator is also responsible for assuring overall smooth operation of lab courses by: maximizing efficient use of lab space; providing resource management and fiscal oversight; and, assuring availability of and access to adequate instructional technology. The incumbent serves as the liaison to other outside groups wishing to use teaching lab facilities during the summer months. Each quarter there are typically 10 to 12 courses with a total of approximately 1600 students enrolled.

The incumbent is responsible for oversight of UC Laboratory Safety Policies in the teaching labs. The Academic Coordinator will serve as a standing member of the Division of Biological Sciences Education Committee.

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on University of California pay scales.

The successful candidate is expected to have:

  • Experience in hiring and supervising staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to oversee and manage large and complex budgets.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • Exceptionally strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively to plan, implement, lead, manage, and evaluate projects.
  • Exceptionally strong oral and written communication skills.
  • D. in biology or related field.
  • University-level teaching experience is desired.
