The Weatherhead School of Management’s Director of Employer Development is part of a specialized counseling team focused on assisting students and alumni in finding career opportunities to achieve their professional goals. In addition, the director of employer development is responsible for creating and conducting employer development activities guided through the mission and executive director. The position reports to the executive director and is an integral part of the management school’s overall external relations strategy by developing and strengthening relationships with employers and alumni to increase recruitment activity of the school’s campus.
Develop the employer development strategy through industry research of trends and demands, knowledge of student interest areas, and best practices research. Engage various teams in execution of the employer development strategy through delegation of employer outreach, meetings, and events as well as internal monthly meetings and ongoing communication. Research new prospects for the employer development team for additional outreach/travel. Proactively reach out to contacts, cold-call company representatives and establish a relationship on behalf of the management school. Identify and cultivate employer relationships with local, national, and international employers with a goal of interacting with at least 100 employers per year through conference calls, local and national career fairs, alumni receptions, emails, and employer visits. Assist with the tracking of employment statistics. Develop customized resume books for employers based on their business needs by sourcing qualified students who are available and interested in the opportunities at hand. (30%)
Advise and coach students and alumni in one-on-one meetings regarding career planning, job search strategies, resume and cover letter preparation, interviewing skills, job offer negotiations and networking. Develop and track goals for student placement strategies. (20%)
Lead the organization of bi-annual graduate business student career fairs to bring more employers to the management school’s campus and track return on investment based on those fairs. Collaborate with the university Post Graduate Planning & Experiential Education and the management school Undergraduate Studies staff to execute a large fall career fair for both undergraduates and graduate students. (8%)
Provide consulting services with small- to mid-size employers regarding their recruiting strategies and execution including job description development, Fair Labor Standards Act guidelines for paid internships, and marketing their brand to students. (8%)
Oversee the employer side of the office database, CareerLink (powered by Symplicity), which includes, ensuring relevancy of current job postings, sourcing new job postings, ensuring employer contacts and notes are updated, and managing descriptions of workshops and events to students. (7%)
Lead compilation and analysis of office measurable including student development interactions and employer development activities (dashboards). Collect feedback from employers and students on employer events to ensure quality delivery and mutual satisfaction. Use feedback to make necessary adjustments. Lead, plan and manage career development events related to employers, including educational workshops, information sessions, networking receptions and on-campus interviewing and develop communication pieces for both students and employers. (7%)
Manage off-site student treks including day treks to local employers and multi-day treks outside of Cleveland through employer/alumni outreach, collaboration with External Relations, and coordination with students. (6%)
Develop curriculum for programming based on student needs and deliver workshops such as Behavioral Interviewing, LinkedIn, Networking, etc. Collaborate with the director of enrollment and career development to develop curriculum and deliverables for the MBA Professional Career Management course. (6%)
Work with the executive director to develop and implement year-round marketing strategy to communicate employment opportunities for management students and alumni through CareerLink, social media (LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook), national conferences and other sources and market these opportunities to appropriate school constituency. Lead the employer communication strategy which includes employer newsletters and career fair invitations through MailChimp, email communication, social media (LinkedIn and Twitter) and other proactive targeted outreach for events. Represent the school as a member of the MBA Career Services and employer alliance, employer relations team, by attending monthly calls, sharing best practices, and brainstorming solutions to ongoing challenges with employer development. Collaborate with local professional organizations to network with employers and research hiring trends. (2%)
Engage and collaborate with various school departments and committees to promote and serve the needs of students; promote and improve alumni relations; build the alumni employer base; assist the career development team with career related activities that are cross-functional; participate in admissions programs aimed at recruiting top prospective students. Provide support and guidance in the development of diversity programming and other professional development initiatives. Collaborate with the student development committee of the alumni advisory council to source alumni volunteers and identify opportunities to collaborate with students. (2%)
Department: Continuous interaction with department staff to maintain workflow.
University: Frequent interaction with other career management offices on campus to facilitate and promote joint action/ cooperation to achieve immediate operating results and/or resolve management problems.
External: Continuous interaction with key stakeholders including faculty, deans, alumni, corporate partners, and civic leaders, among others to represent the school.
Students: Continuous interaction with students exchange information, address concerns, and/or make adjustments.
Supervise the career and employer development manager and a graduate assistant.
Travel locally, nationally as required.
Experience: 5 to 7 years professional experience, preferably in human resources, training and development or career development, in a corporation, university, a public agency. Experience in recruitment and selection for professional level roles in finance, marketing, healthcare, law, consulting or other professional fields.
Education/Licensing: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
