Under direct supervision, the Research Assistant I position is part of a multidisciplinary team studying epigenetics, chromatin structure, and gene expression.  Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, performing techniques related to cell and molecular biology and biochemistry. Tasks include maintenance of tissue, DNA, and other experimental samples, as well as taking part in data analysis and experimental planning.  Other duties include assisting with general laboratory maintenance, including equipment maintenance, and ordering of supplies, etc.


The Dixon Lab seeks to interrogate the role of 3D genome architecture and chromatin regulation in both normal cellular biology and in cancer initiation and progression. Harnessing the power of genomic tools and advances in genome-engineering, we are investigating the relationship between TADs (topologically-associating domains) and subsequent gene expression. The lab is also actively involved in a multiple of ongoing collaborative projects. By integrating genomic approaches, we aim to uncover insights about the structural and epigenetic landscape of cancer progression beyond standard cytogenetic approaches. Successful candidates will be eager to acquire experimental knowledge to leverage next-generation sequencing techniques and answer fundamental biological questions.


Molecular and Cell Biology and Biochemistry Techniques (80%)

  • Preparation of libraries for high-throughput/next-generation DNA sequencing.
  • Performing experiments including ChIP-seq and RNA-seq.
  • DNA Cloning, PCR, Isolation and purification of RNA, Real time PCR, Maxi and Mini preps of DNA, Restriction digestion of DNA, Transformation of E. coli.
  • Protein isolation from mouse tissue, Protein determination, Immunoprecipitation, Western blotting.
  • Mammalian cell culture, transfections, infections, lysing, thawing and freezing down cells.
  • Maxi preps.
  • Gel Electrophoresis.
  • Recombinant DNA techniques.

Laboratory Support (20%)

  • Perform general laboratory organization, cleaning, and maintenance.
  • Stock and order supplies as needed.



  • No professional experience required with relevant degree


  • Demonstrated experience and application of molecular biology knowledge preferably in biochemistry and cell culture.
  • Demonstrated experience with general lab maintenance, including cleaning, stocking supply inventory, and ensuring the maintenance of a sterile environment.



  • Bachelor's degree in biological sciences or related field.



  • Theoretical and hands on knowledge of biology techniques.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in researching information and analyzing data to arrive at valid conclusions, recommendations, and plans of action.
  • Ability to learn and carry out new experimental procedures with accuracy and efficiency. Demonstrated ability to follow verbal and/or written protocols, including follow-up on previously begun procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to record data accurately and enter into appropriate medium.
  • Skill in the operation and maintenance of various lab equipment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with both PC and MAC operating systems, standard business office equipment and commonly used software and tools, such as Microsoft Office, electronic mail, and the internet.
  • Proficiency with common office software applications as well as software applications used for research, recording, and analysis.
  • Highly organized, effective at multitasking, adept at juggling changing priorities
  • Proven ability to work both independently and also as part of a collaborative team.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including tact, diplomacy, and flexibility.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with diverse groups. Demonstrated skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with personnel at all levels.


  • Must be willing to work in an animal-related research environment.
  • Must be willing to work an adjusted schedule to support research needs.
  • Successful completion of the Institute's background investigation.
  • Must be willing to sign a confidentiality agreement.
