The University Libraries invites applications and nominations for the position of Head of Collection Services and tenure-track Associate Professor/Professor. This is a twelve-month position based on the Statesboro Campus, with some travel to the Armstrong Campus located in Savannah, Georgia.

Georgia Southern University was founded in 1906 as a school for teaching modern agricultural production techniques and homemaking skills to rural school children. Its Savannah campus was established in 1935 as Armstrong Junior College for local youth who could not afford to attend college away from home. The Liberty Center in Hinesville was established in 1998 to serve the military and their families at nearby Fort Stewart, the largest military base east of the Mississippi. All three locations came together in 2018 when Armstrong State University and Georgia Southern University consolidated. Reporting to the Dean of Libraries, the Head of Collection Services provides critical leadership, guidance, and operational oversight to library functions related to collection development and management, including budgeting; acquisitions; cataloging; metadata control; discovery services; access troubleshooting; institutional repository services; and assessment and reporting.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Supervise and provide leadership to up to five librarians, thirteen full-time staff members, and one part-time staff member organized into multiple cross-departmental teams across two campuses. Oversee hiring and training of all departmental staff and provide guidance in all personnel matters. Oversee the development and enforcement of all departmental staff policies
Support the Libraries administration with annual budget planning and monitor and manage all collections-related budget expenditures. Prepare budget projection and expenditure reports as requested.
Coordinate preparation of all collections-related internal and external reports as requested (e.g., annual reports; ACRL, IPEDS, accreditation, and insurance reports).
Co-Chair the Libraries' Collection Development Committee
Oversee and provide leadership to strategic planning, goal setting, and monitoring of progress for the department and the Collection Development Committee.
Oversee the development and application of the Libraries' collection development policy.
Oversee the provision of patron-driven acquisition of library resources in all formats to meet the teaching and research needs of all students, faculty, and staff across three campuses, and online.
Oversee the development, documentation, and execution of all departmental workflows pursuant to maximizing discovery of and access to all library collections.
Oversee and provide leadership to all cross-departmental teams across two campuses, including acquisitions and budgeting; cataloging and metadata management; collection development; discovery services (including the eTeam); and institutional repository services.
Facilitate and support collection-related projects and initiatives across library units.
Facilitate and support the continuous review of library collections and resources.
Serve on the Dean's Advisory Council.
Fulfill functional area responsibilities within collection services as assigned.
The position is a fiscal year (12 month), faculty-ranked, tenure-track appointment, and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Rank will be at Associate Professor or Professor, depending upon qualifications, experience, and a strong record of scholarly productivity.
Master's degree from an ALA-accredited school of library/information studies.
For rank of Associate Professor: A minimum of 5 years full-time professional (post-MLIS) experience in academic libraries is required along with a record of research productivity with publications and presentations in professional venues.
For rank of Professor: A minimum of 7 years full-time professional (post-MLIS) experience in academic libraries is required along with a strong record of research productivity with substantial publications and presentations in professional venues.
Three or more years of supervisory experience in an academic library setting.
Demonstrable commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Strong record of applying technical expertise, leadership, and collaboration in one or more areas of academic library collection services (e.g., acquisitions, cataloging and metadata, collection development, discovery services, and institutional repositories).
Experience with budget planning, reporting, and effective stewardship of budget allocations.
Experience preparing library collections-related reports.
Experience developing, implementing, managing, evaluating, and improving library collections.
Strong working knowledge of national and international metadata standards and practices.
Knowledge of resource licensing and management of e-resources.
Experience working with integrated library systems (e.g., Ex Libris Alma).
Willingness to engage with institutional student success initiatives.
Commitment to engaging with best practice initiatives in instruction, mentoring, and professional development.
Must be authorized to work in the United States for the duration of employment without assistance from the institution.
Demonstrable experience with project management and initiating new services and programs.
Ability to adapt quickly to operational changes.
Experience working in a consortium.
Experience with institutional repository and data management services.
Experience working collaboratively in a multi-campus environment.
