The Research Fellow (IPCC Chapter Scientist) reports directly to the Coordinating Lead Author of the chapter that he/she is providing support for-in this case the Coordinating Lead Author of the Small Islands chapter in the IPCC Working Group 2, based at PaCE-SD, USP.
The primary Role of the Chapter Scientist is to provide technical support to one or more chapters. The responsibilities of the CS is to an author team(s), not to an individual of an author team. The CS will be involve in a wide range of support tasks, including organisation of chapter teleconferences, reference checking and compilation, figure drafting, traceability checking, identification of overlaps or inconsistencies across chapters, and technical editing to enhance consistency with the WGII AR6 Chapter Template and Style Guide.
Whilst the role is not to take the primary responsibility for sections of the chapter or to independently assess literature, CS will not function as the Lead Author, however may serve as contributing Authors.
The CS must observe all of the principles and procedures of the IPCC, including IPCC Policies on confidentiality, communication and conflict of interest.
To be considered for this position, it is essential that the appointee is a well qualified professional with integrity and confidence with a PhD or PhD thesis in the process of examination in Environmental Science or Environmental Management discipline from a recognised institution with project management/research/consultancy experience in climate change related issues as demonstrated by good publications in ranked journals. In addition to this, evidence of some research supervision is required. Contribution to the successful implementation of research projects is preferable.
Preference will be given to applicants with:
Qualification in international relations, English or related technical (non-software) writing/editing discipline, with 4-5 years of scientific editing experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience;
Experience in technical writing, data management and analysis;
Mastery of statistical software, R Stats;
Python Programming experience desirable;
Hands on experience on use of Endnote Reference Manager or Mendeley is essential;
Experience/familiarity with international and/or regional organisations;
Relevant experience with the IPCC;
Sound analytical, organizational and coordination skills;
Experience working with and editing English as Second Language documents and authors is required. An international background or knowledge of other cultures is strongly preferred;
Experience editing proposals and project deliverables preferred;
Advanced knowledge of fundamental principles, terminology, and methodology of technical editing and document organization;
Able to work effectively in multi-cultural setting;
Scientific referencing skills are a must;
Effective communication skills, required for providing diplomatic and constructive comments to clients, providing project leadership on publications teams and developing and maintaining strong client base.
