The Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine (LSU-SVM) seeks a distinguished academic leader for the position of Head of the Department of Comparative Biomedical Sciences (CBS). Appointment will be at the level of Full Professor with indefinite tenure.
The Department of Comparative Biomedical Sciences, one of three departments in the SVM, has 23 full-time faculty members with over $4 million in annual direct cost research funding. Department faculty conduct basic and applied research in environmental/inhalation toxicology, lung biology, stem cell biology, structural bone and tissue engineering, cell signaling, neuroscience and oncology. The department offers MS and PhD research degrees in Biomedical and Veterinary Medical Sciences for both DVM and non-DVM graduate students, plus a non-research post-baccalaureate graduate certificate. Graduate courses are offered in disciplines related to the scholarly mission of the Department. Department faculty also are responsible for the early basic science training portion of the professional curriculum in the DVM program: gross anatomy, embryology, cell biology, histology, physiology, pharmacology and toxicology.
We are seeking an outstanding individual with a PhD, DVM, VMD, MD, or equivalent degree(s) in a biomedical sciences discipline, with a strong record of scholarship in an area related to the research interests of the Department, a history of continuing extramural funding success, accomplishments commensurate with the title of Full Professor, and the ability to gain approval as a member of the LSU Graduate Faculty. The successful applicant should demonstrate an interest in graduate and professional education, and an appreciation for the multifaceted mission of the Department, which includes professional and graduate teaching, and basic and applied research. This individual should have significant administrative/managerial experience and possess outstanding communication skills.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Department Head, as the Executive Officer of the academic department, leads and inspires a vibrant group of faculty and staff focused on biomedical research and the teaching of veterinary and graduate students. The Head administers the teaching, research and service programs of the Department in addition to managing the fiscal, human, and physical resources of the department. The Head of the Department shall in accord with University and School policies:
SUPERVISION: Reports to the Dean. Supervises departmental faculty, research and office staff, graduate students.
PhD, DVM, VMD, MD or equivalent in a biomedical sciences discipline, with a strong record of scholarship in an area related to the research interests of the department, a history of continuing extramural funding success, and accomplishments commensurate with the title of Full Professor and the ability to gain approval as a member of the LSU Graduate Faculty. Experience in a School/College of Veterinary Medicine or a Health Sciences Center is desired. Leadership and mentorship experience, especially involving fiscal and personnel management is desired.
