Job Description

The Cheng Zhang lab (https://www.pharmacology.us/faculty/ChengZhang) at the University of Pittsburgh is looking for a Research Technician. We use structural biology approaches including protein crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) to study molecular mechanisms of function of cell surface receptors such as G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). We are seeking a research technician to assist and work with the PI to perform biochemical and molecular studies on some understudied membrane proteins as emerging drug targets. Duties will include: 1) Membrane protein engineering and production for vaccine development against bacterial pathogens; 2) Production of human membrane proteins and therapeutic antibodies for structural and pharmacological studies. The incumbent will be expected to work independently on aspects of several research projects as well as assist other lab work.

The Cheng Zhang lab performs cutting-edge research in membrane protein structural biology, protein engineering, and antibody development. See our most recent publications on Nature (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31168089/), Cell (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33571431/), Science (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33154108/), Nature Communications (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32060286/, https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33110062/), and Molecular Cell (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30220562/). Working in the lab, you will have the opportunities to 1) learn useful techniques like large-scale membrane protein and antibody production using insect and mammalian cells, lipidic cubic phase crystallography, cryo-EM sample preparation, antibody engineering, membrane protein purification, etc. These skills are highly demanded in academic labs and the pharmaceutical industry; 2) be authored in high-impact scientific journals; 3) have interactions and build connections with top scientists in cell biology, pharmacology, immunology, and structural biology.

Candidates are expected to have at least a baccalaureate degree in life sciences or related fields. Two years’ experience or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience in life sciences or related fields is preferred. Background in biochemistry/structural biology/pharmacology/cell biology is preferred. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are needed. Salary is negotiable based on experience.

Please contact Dr. Cheng Zhang or apply through the university website https://cfopitt.taleo.net/careersection/pitt_staff_external/jobdetail.ftl?job=21004544&lang=en if you are interested.
