Job Description

Physician Assistant Program Director

General Statement of Duties:

The department leader shall be responsible for the organization, administration, continuous review, planning, development and general effectiveness of the physician assistant program. This is a full-time 12-month at the rank of assistant professor with a clinical faculty appointment as program director of the physician assistant department. At least 80% of that time must be devoted to academic and administrative responsibilities in support of the program.

The program director must possess at least three years of full-time, higher education experience, and must hold a current or emeritus NCCPA certification status, and at minimum a have earned a master’s degree.

The program director must provide effective leadership by exhibiting:

a) responsiveness to issues related to personnel

 b) strong communication skills

 c) proactive problem solving.

The program director must be knowledgeable about and responsible for:

 a) program organization

b) program administration,

c) fiscal management of the program

 d) continuous programmatic review and analysis

 e) program planning

 f) program development

 g) completion of ARC-PA required documents

h) adherence to the Standards and ARC-PA policies.

The program director must supervise the medical director, principal and instructional faculty and staff in activities that directly relate to the PA program and department. The program director is responsible for the budgetary, strategic, and day- to- day operations of the academic department, and acts as a liaison between the Dean, the department members, other college constituents, and the students.

Examples of Duties:

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

 1. Direct program assessment process to include assessment of student learning

2. Responsible for developing, reviewing and revising as necessary the mission statement, goals and competencies of the program

3. Evaluate the program

4. Support program enrollment management initiatives as well as evaluate applications and interview candidates for admission

5. Responsible for updating and maintaining the ARC-PA program portal

6. Develop, submit and administer Program Annual Budget

7. Supervise and conduct annual performance evaluation of program staff

8. Responsible for faculty course load assignments and course planning

9. Represent and support the best interests of the department (among internal stakeholders)

10. Advocate for faculty, students, and alumni

11. Administer and submit regulatory or specialized accreditation reporting

12. Responsible for designing, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating the curriculum

13. Develop new programs specific to the physician assistant program and/or revise curricula internally and prepare for NYSED approval:

14. Act as a liaison between various external stakeholders, clinical facilities and the College to include the development of new articulation agreements

15. Recruit faculty and staff to hire and evaluate

16. Participate in selection of students (as required by the discipline) and attend open house and other college- wide recruitment events

17. Maintain Departmental Policy and Procedures administration and updating

18. Participate in annual department operational planning in alignment with the college’s strategic planning

19. Participate as a member of the Academic Council and School of Health Professions Leadership Team

20. Hold regular department meetings

21. Assist in writing grant proposals and securing external funding resources as needed

22. Elect Departmental Personnel Committee (DPC) members

23. Conduct annual & DPC faculty performance evaluation

24. Advise and promote faculty development

25. Maintain Program Records: Faculty personnel files, minutes of program committee meetings, student files, and fiscal accounting

26. Counsel students regarding their education as well as their professional development (Oversee student advisement and academic progress)

27. Review and respond to student appeals of the student progress committee

28. Supervise, develop, monitor, and update departmental strategic planning

29. Maintain professional competence

30. The program director, as a faculty member, will be required to teach throughout the curriculum, participate in school-wide and college-wide, service and community service, and engage in scholarship.

31. Any other unique, discipline specific responsibilities including those required by an accrediting body

Responsibilities:

 Department leaders, in consultation with their respective faculties, shall be responsible to the Dean or designee for the supervision of the personnel and the implementation of the educational programs of the department for which they serve. Department leaders shall have such other powers, duties, and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Dean.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Doctoral degree

2. Exceptional competence in his or her field

3. Leadership and administrative experience in higher education

4. Eligible for licensure in New York
