The University of Southern Maine (USM) is pleased to announce an exciting opening for an Associate Vice President of Operations.
About the Position:
The AVP of Operations will be responsible for collaborating on University capital projects, working with University of Maine System Capital Planning and Project Management (CPPM) in their day-to-day oversight capacity and with USM Facilities Management staff members. The incumbent will work closely with Facilities Management and USM administrators on multi-year capital planning to advance USM campuses in a strategic, cost-effective manner. At present, the University is implementing its Master Facilities Plan, approved by the UMS BOT in 2019, with the initial Portland Campus Development project underway. That project includes a new 42,000 square foot Career and Student Success Center, a 580-bed residence hall, replaces the central parking lot on Bedford Street with a one-acre green quad, and precedes a planned expansion of surface parking on the Portland campus as well as the development of a new Center for the Arts. Improvement plans to the Gorham and Lewiston campuses are being developed.
Additionally, this position oversees auxiliary services, such as University Parking Services, the Office of Sustainability and the University Store. Oversight of Parking Services includes managing staff, ensuring proper maintenance and function of existing parking facilities and developing strategies to address current and future parking demand. The incumbent will support the Director of Sustainability's efforts to implement sustainability policies and initiatives, such as the Strategic Sustainability Plan, President's Carbon Commitment and Transportation Demand Management Plan. The incumbent will also oversee University Store operations, managing staff and working with the team to maximize merchandising opportunities while ensuring commitment to customer service. The University Store is currently implementing new enterprise resource planning software which handles in-store point-of-sale, website and ecommerce, inventory management, merchandise ordering/receiving/billing operation, and customer relationship management.
An ideal candidate will have experience in overseeing and collaborating on large capital projects at a senior management level. About USM's Capital Projects:
USM is currently in the process of implementing a Master Plan that was developed from 2017-19 and approved by the UMS Board of Trustees in January 2019. The first step of the Master Plan is the Portland Campus Development project, which is USM's largest construction project ever undertaken and will entail constructing a new 42,000 square foot Career and Student Success Center, a 580-bed residence hall, and replace the central parking lot on Bedford Street with a one-acre green quad. This work is scheduled to be completed in June 2023.
Other capital projects include the possible expansion of the Wishcamper parking garage and numerous deferred maintenance projects to improve the student/staff experience. The University has 85 buildings and over 2,000,000 square feet of maintained space. The University has averaged approximately $8 million in project expense per year over the last 10 years on all forms of capital improvements. There are currently 38 active construction projects with budgets totaling $38 million. The active projects typically range from 30-60 at any given time.
Annual salary: $95-110K. Relocation reimbursement available.
