Georgia Southern University was founded in 1906 as a school for teaching modern agricultural production techniques and homemaking skills to rural school children. Its Savannah campus was established in 1935 as Armstrong Junior College for local youth who could not afford to attend college away from home. The Liberty Center in Hinesville was established in 1998 to serve the military and their families at nearby Fort Stewart, the largest military base east of the Mississippi. All three locations came together in 2018 when Armstrong State University and Georgia Southern University consolidated. Position Description. Reporting to the Dean of Libraries, the Head of Research Services is responsible for the effective management of the Research Services Department and fostering collegiality and unit morale, including the supervision and evaluation of the research services, government information, special collections and scholarly communication librarians and staff. The department employs approximately 9+ faculty and 2 staff. The Head of Research Services supervises a team of librarians responsible for implementing instructional services and outreach, including workload distribution, goal setting, performance evaluation, teaching observations, and professional development.
The position is responsible for guiding the development of the department's assessment program in collaboration with the Head of Reference and Instruction at Lane Library. The Head of Research Services introduces and leads library initiatives that support information literacy and ensures continuity of instructional service between all campuses, and builds and implements a programmatic instruction plan for both undergraduate and graduate programs, including face-to-face and virtual modes of delivery in partnership with the Head of Reference and Instruction. The continual evaluation and assessment of these programs are crucial and will be a shared responsibility with the Head of Reference and Instruction. With the Head of Reference and Instruction, this position will oversee the continuous development and growth of the Liaison Program. This position also advocates for the Libraries to the wider campus community and local jurisdictions, especially regarding research services/support to meet the evolving needs of faculty, students, researchers, and alumni working across multiple disciplines, and physical and logistical pathways. The Department Head ensures that principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility are fully integrated throughout the work of the department and oversees creation, implementation, marketing, and assessment of digital learning objects (tutorials, videos, etc.) to support educational needs.
The Department Head advocates for the faculty and staff in the department and for resources and funding. This position represents the Libraries to our different constituents and collaborates with university and community partners. The Head of Research Services is a member of the Dean's Advisory Council and collaborates with other Department Heads to advise the Dean of Libraries regarding the strategic direction of the department and libraries on both campuses. The Department Head partners with key stakeholders to proactively and continually identify research and learning needs and solutions and is a collaborative partner and agile communicator between Libraries and University departments.
The Head of Research Services identifies instructional opportunities for incorporating Special Collections and Archives materials within the campus curriculum and oversees training and professional development for librarians on all aspects of library instruction, including theory, pedagogy, and best practices. The successful candidate is a dynamic, student-focused educator with demonstrated leadership skills, who continually transforms and assesses education and outreach services by using quantitative and qualitative data to inform planning while actively monitoring the campus curriculum. With enthusiasm, the Department Head will continue to build an understanding of the library's role in advancing the educational mission across campus.
The position is a fiscal year (12 month), faculty-ranked, tenure-track appointment, and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Rank will be at associate professor or professor, depending upon qualifications, experience, and a strong record of scholarly productivity.
Master's degree from an American Library Association accredited program in library/information studies.
For Rank of Associate Professor: A minimum of 5 years full-time professional (post-MLIS) experience in academic libraries is required along with a record of research productivity with publications and presentations in professional venues.
For Rank of Professor: A minimum of 7 years full-time professional (post-MLIS) experience in academic libraries is required along with a strong record of research productivity with substantial publications and presentations in professional venues.
Three or more years of faculty supervisory experience in an academic library setting.
Demonstrable commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Knowledge of current learning, teaching, and information literacy practices.
Ability to work collaboratively with diverse colleagues, students, and faculty.
Professional experience teaching an information literacy curriculum.
Experience in a liaison program.
Commitment to engaging with best practice initiatives in instruction and pedagogy, mentoring, and curriculum design and development.
Willingness to engage with institutional student success initiatives.
Must be authorized to work in the United States for the duration of employment without assistance from the institution.
Experience working with colleagues on new technology projects, supporting innovative technologies, or finding solutions to technological issues.
Experience creating or implementing programming in support of student success.
Experience designing or administering quantitative or qualitative assessments.
Knowledge of current learning, teaching, and information literacy practices.
Willingness to engage in flexible teaching formats (online or face-to-face) to respond to academic and scholarly needs in compliance with local, state or federal health regulations during/after COVID-19 pandemic
