The Assistant Dean for the California School of Education (CSOE) reports to the dean and works closely with the Program Directors and/or Coordinators & Directors, Office of Institutional Research, Accountability and Compliance Officer, Accreditation Liaison Officer, Student Services as well as with various entities on and off campus such as: Academic Council, Provost's Office, Office of the Registrar, Finance, Human Resources, various school district liaisons, and the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. The AD champions excellence in teaching and learning and promotes innovation to enhance student experiences. The Assistant Dean serves as a member of the CSOE Dean's leadership team. The AD is expected to assist with strategic planning and to implement initiatives related to the Mission and Strategic Plan of the CSOE and the University and accrediting bodies. The AD supports the Dean in maintaining smooth, efficient, and effective operations within the School. The AD provides leadership in: student Evaluation and Review Committee/Credential Review Committee; resolving Student Complaints; collaborative efforts with stakeholders in the community and P-16 populations; and unit and program accreditation, as well as all other areas as directed by the Dean.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Assistant Dean Activities/Responsibilities

  • Assists the dean in providing oversight for the review of curriculum proposals, curriculum changes, new program development
  • Provide supervision for the Credential Department
  • Supervise the Field Placement and Clinical Practice operations
  • Lead planning and manage CSOE endeavors related to serving students from recruitment to admissions to graduation to post-graduation support
  • Lead accreditation efforts for the CSOE (WASC, CAEP, CCTC etc.). Provides leadership in assessment efforts for the school by working with faculty and staff to implement and maintain assessment system. Collaborate with the Office of Institutional Research to develop, implement, and review unit assessment and reporting procedures as well as review and respond to the data collection and analysis; support CSOE programs in the process of continuous improvement based on valid and reliable assessment practices
  • Coordinate the process of establishing Memoranda of Understanding with fieldwork placement sites; ensure maintenance of records for placements in all programs; oversee stipends for directing/cooperating teachers
  • Provide leadership for collaborative efforts with the community and P-16 populations, particularly as they interface with university-based credential programs. Strengthen the reputation of the CSOE by implementing communication strategies and ensuring that channels of communication are available between the school and key stakeholders
  • Represent CSOE on committees, projects, and make presentations at state and national meetings
  • Assist with drafting responses and reports to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing

Faculty Activities/Responsibilities
Facilitating Learning

  • Facilitating Classroom and Distance/Distributed Learning
  • Course and syllabus preparation
  • Class curriculum coordination and planning
  • Assessment and evaluation of learners
  • Student selection, orientation, and assessment
  • Mentoring and advising of students
  • Field placement supervision and coordination
  • Research/scholarship mentoring and supervision, particularly of MA theses, PsyD projects, and PhD, EdD, DBA dissertations

Scholarship - Scholarship/ research reflecting the generation, integration, dissemination and application of knowledge, as well as creative and original contributions to one's field commensurate with academic rank.
Service - All faculty engage in service to the University, Community and Profession commensurate with academic rank. Examples in each category include:

  • Service to the University:
    • Hiring and evaluating faculty Participating in developing, revising, and coordinating curriculum as well as maintaining program vitality
    • Participating in processes to improve academic program quality
    • Participating in processes to improve quality of School, campus, and University faculty experience Participating in faculty governance
  • Service to the Community:
    • Contributions at the local, state, and national levels involving one's professional expertise to the public, to organizations, and to governmental entities
  • Service to the Profession:
    • Participation in and leadership of professional organizations
    • Reviewing for journals, conferences, and research grant panels

Duties Required of All Faculty - Certain duties are additionally required of all faculty and are not given formal workload credit but will be included in yearly evaluations. These include but are not limited to:

  • active participation in campus life to sustain a high level of facilitated learning;
  • participation in program governance, including program-based committees, with the exception of SERC which may receive up to three units of service workload credit at the discretion of the Program Director and the approval of the Dean and the Provost/VPAA;
  • active participation in program and campus activities (including scheduled and impromptu meetings of faculty, staff, and students);
  • picking up and promptly responding to paper, voice and electronic mail and messages;
  • visibility and accessibility supporting a sense of community;
  • regular accessibility either by person, by telephone and/or virtually to students, colleagues and the greater University community;
  • posting of teaching schedules, office hours, and procedures for making appointments on the faculty member's door, online and on syllabi;
  • attendance and participation in program, department, faculty and Faculty Assembly meetings;
  • responding in a timely fashion to students' requests for meetings, to telephone calls, and to e-mail communications;
  • participating in Faculty Assembly and program faculty meetings;
  • carrying an advising load of up to fourteen students (depending on size of the program and the judgment of the Program Director);
  • participation in hiring faculty;
  • participation in developing, revising and coordinating curriculum and maintaining program vitality;
  • participation in processes to improve quality of school/college, campus and University faculty experience; and
  • participation in, selection, admission and retention of new students, including attendance at admissions open houses, participating in admission interviews, new student orientation, and advising of students.
  • Submittal of grades, attendance, syllabi, and textbook orders in compliance with University established procedures and deadlines.
  • Perform other related tasks, duties and responsibilities as required, assigned or directed.


  • Evidence of successful academic planning and implementation of Credential programs, graduate programs, online courses, and doctoral programs.
  • Demonstrated success in budget and personnel management and a distinguished record of teaching and scholarship and leadership.
  • Demonstrated success in supervision of multi -campus sites, faculty, and staff.
  • Demonstrated ability with strategic planning.
  • Appreciation of and cultivation of inclusive excellence and diversity.
  • Knowledge of the disciplines and programs represented in the CSOE.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties related to internal operations of the College including, but not limited to: accreditation, assessment, curriculum, facilities, personnel, and student success.
  • Commitment to serving diverse constituencies in a shared governance environment;
  • Ability to interpret policies and apply regulations within given business practices and organizational structures.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Education: A doctoral or other terminal degree, from an accredited college or university, in a discipline that is within the scope of the School's program.
  • Experience: Three (3) years of Higher education teaching experience, Two (2) years of experience in an administrative role (e.g., program director, department chair, or similar position); Direct experience overseeing Teacher Education programs preferred
  • Certifications, Licenses, etc.: Valid Credential (or a reciprocal credential/certification from another State) is preferred
