Job location is in Salk North (Torrey Pines)

In partnership with the Sr. Director, Human Resources and HR Managers, ensures compliance in HR-related functions and makes recommendations for change as needed. Determines and recommends employment practices necessary to establish a positive employer-employee relationship and promote a high level of employee morale.

Position provides objective advice to personnel and supervisors regarding conflict, disputes, employment regulations, job performance, conduct and disciplinary process.  Negotiates, mediates, and investigates employment issues. Interprets and advises on application of Institute and departmental policies.  Works to resolve conflicts at all levels. Provides knowledgeable advice on legislative, regulatory, policy, and current practices related to employment issues.



  • Minimum of 7 years progressive work in Human Resources with extensive experience on complex employee relations, conflict resolution, investigations and/or risk management matters.


  • Experience in a scientific research environment and/or higher education environment
  • Title IX knowledge and experience



  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in Human Resources with emphasis on employee relations, issues resolution, conflict management, performance management, and related training, etc.


  • Human Resources Certificate or PHR or SPHR



  •  Knowledge and experience with federal and California employment laws, including CFRA/FMLA, FLSA, EEO, AA, CA Labor Code, ADA, and Title IX.
  • Knowledge of external agencies and their role in the compliant process, including, EOC, DFEH, OCR, OFCCP, and DOL.
  • Experience with leading complex employee relations matters
  • Experience with conducting interviews that result in critical fact gathering
  • Ability to gather, analyze, and synthesize information and data from multiple sources and summarize investigative findings in writing clearly and concisely
  • Must be experienced and comfortable with common computer system applications, reporting software, and must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook
  • Strong organizational and time management skills. Keen attention to detail.
  • Excellent oral and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to multitask and be flexible in a dynamic environment
  • Sense of urgency, willingness to do what it takes


  •  Experience in Training & Development, Leaves of Absence, Reasonable Accommodations, Worker's Compensation


  •  Must be willing to work in an animal-related research environment
  • Satisfactory completion of the Institute's background investigation
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule as needed based on workload and deadlines
  • Willing to sign an Employee Confidentiality Agreement


This position will be constantly adjusting focus, grasping, hearing, keying, seeing, sitting, talking, analyzing, calculating, communicating, reading, reasoning, writing and working inside.
