The University of Notre Dame seeks a music historian, appointable at the level of associate or full professor, with tenure, who will direct Notre Dame's Graduate Program in Sacred Music. The person appointed to this position will have a distinguished record as a scholar, a gift for and interest in teaching graduate students, and successful experience in or a strong aptitude for administrative work and collaboration within the arts. Knowledge of the musical and liturgical traditions of some period within the history of the Roman Catholic Church, and/or an understanding of contemporary issues regarding music and liturgy within the Church is essential.
SMND is an independent graduate music program within the College of Arts and Letters, responsible for the Master of Sacred Music degree in conducting, organ, and voice, and for the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in conducting and organ. The program supports three graduate studios, several choral ensembles, the Notre Dame Children's Choir, managed by its artistic director, and numerous relationships with local churches and other venues where our students serve as interns. With around 30 graduate students in residence at a given time, the program is highly competitive and has an excellent placement record. More information is available at https://sacredmusic.nd.edu/
Affiliated faculty, most of whom are also appointed in the departments of Music and/or of Theology, work with the Director of SMND to design the curriculum, manage the choral ensembles, and maintain musical instruments and facilities. The Director of SMND shares the responsibility with the Chair of the Department of Music for O'Neill Hall of Music and Sacred Music (opened in 2018), including its concert venues, classrooms, and other spaces. O'Neill Hall also houses a full-service music library. The Director reports to the Dean of the College of Arts and Letters, liaises with the development officer within the College, manages the SMND budget, and is a member of both the Dean's Committee of Deans, Chairs, and Directors, and of the Provost's Committee for Departments Chairs/School Liaisons/Program Directors.
The Director works in close partnership with the Chair of the Department of Music and with the professional staff of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart to sustain the vibrant musical life now flourishing at the University of Notre Dame. The Director also meets regularly with the Director of the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center to advance common goals. DeBartolo Performing Arts Center (opened in 2004) (https://performingarts.nd.edu
) has six acoustically outstanding performing spaces, including the Reyes Organ and Choral Hall, and presents top-ranked international and national performers. O'Neill Hall and the DPAC form the core of an emerging arts corridor on campus.Qualifications:
