Job Description

 

Overview:

The Dean of the Ruth S. Coleman College of Nursing and Health Sciences has a scholarly vision and exceptional qualities in his/her ability to advance the college’s distinctive mission, goals, identity and legacy.  The Dean creates a supportive climate that fosters collaboration with other programs within the College as well as the University and demonstrates outstanding qualities of leadership, research, teaching, and service.  The ability to work effectively with diverse communities, along with an accomplished record of fund-raising and development of strategic partnerships across disciplines for both on campus and off campus programs and with key external constituents is essential. The Dean will work with volunteers, members of the University’s Advancement Office, and faculty to identify supporters and gift prospects. The Dean must be an articulate spokesperson and advocate for the College and the University.  The Dean will provide overall financial direction for total budgetary and fiscal affairs and will be responsible for the fiscal viability of the academic programs and the College.

Leadership:

  • Provides overall leadership and creates an environment of excellence in the College
  • Guides the College in strategic planning
  • Works with faculty and staff to assure the academic quality and integrity of all programs
  • Demonstrate leadership skills related to accreditation processes and program/departmental evaluation

Financial:

  • Responsible for fiscal planning, budgeting, and management of financial resources
  • Works closely with the Business Office and the financial analyst assigned to the College

Administrative:

  • Assures accreditation compliance and processes in the continuous review and improvement of all programs and projects for assigned areas as applicable
  • Reviews and approves contracts and faculty/staff assignments for the College

  • Addresses faculty issues/grievances according to College and University guidelines
  • Oversees the development and management of assigned program budgets

Human Capital:

  • Leads the College in growth efforts aimed at recruiting, advancing, and maintaining a diverse learning community of faculty, staff and students
  • Directs efforts to support and retain effective faculty and staff
  • Completes performance evaluations for Associate Deans, direct reports, Department/Program Chairs, and staff as appropriate
  • Coordinates all faculty and staff evaluations
  • Mentor faculty (in collaboration with program chairs/associate deans) in the process of applying for promotion and tenure
  • Promotes diversity in the work/educational environment

External Relations and Internal Relations:

  • Provides visibility and develops appropriate relationships with the external local, state, and national community as related to marketing, networking, support of new initiatives, new programs, funding requests etc.
  • Works with the college’s advisory council
  • Identifies, reviews, and applies for grants and funding sources for their appropriateness to College programs and faculty research interests
  • Raises the visibility of the College through the development and implementation of a comprehensive brand platform that builds awareness of the College; positions the College for sustainability locally, regionally and nationally
  • Integrates the College’s mission, vision and initiatives with those of the University
  • In collaboration with the Associate Dean, College faculty and staff, helps to maintain the integrity and quality of programs
  • Other duties as assigned

 Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Associate Dean
  • All college faculty and staff (full-time and part time)

The Dean of the Ruth S. Coleman College of Nursing and Health Sciences will oversee the following:

  • Master’s of Science, Ruth S. Coleman College of Nursing and Health Sciences
  • Bachelor of Science, Ruth S. Coleman College of Nursing and Health Sciences

 

 

 

Preferred and Required Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Current Wisconsin RN license is required, or eligible to obtain
  • Doctorate in Nursing or in a related discipline from an accredited university required
  • Record of excellence in teaching, scholarship, and/or professional activity to meet the qualifications for assignment of faculty rank of Associate or Professor, and qualify for tenure
  • A minimum of three years of successful progressive academic leadership experience, for example, as Dean or Associate Dean in higher education
  • Demonstrated achievement in research
