Executive Director of Human Resources, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Academic Center Location Flexible

Reporting to the President, the Executive Director of Human Resources, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion will lead all human resources' functions, serve as the College's chief diversity officer, and cultivate a vibrant culture that values and promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion across all aspects of the College. This position provides counsel to senior leadership on cultural competency and employee relations and serves as a strategic leader and catalyst to nurture a culturally proficient, equitable, and inclusive community. The person in this position will move between leadership, management, and hands-on engagement, and will oversee the development and implementation of human resources' strategies, plans, and processes for professional development; legal compliance; employee recruitment, selection, & retention; benefits and compensation; and employment practices.

The successful candidate will be an innovative, strategic, and results-oriented leader with a broad vision for the role of diversity in achieving institutional excellence. The person in this role must have demonstrated success as a collaborator and relationship builder, with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to cultivate effective working relationships with a broad range of diverse individuals and groups. The Executive Director of Human Resources, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion will be adept at facilitating difficult discussions, shepherding change, and creating and strengthening partnerships.

Essential Functions

Leads all human resources functions, serves as the College’s chief diversity officer, and cultivates a vibrant culture that values and promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion.

1.       Supervision of HR-related employees, as needed. Provide direction to assigned staff in the performance of their duties, establishing work priorities in achieving strategic and operating plan goals.  

2.       Demonstrate a commitment to equity, excellence, and high expectations for all employees and students by creating organizational policies and structures that remove barriers and foster inclusion for all.  

3.       Collaborate with senior leaders to promote effective diversity, equity, and inclusion strategies across the College, including institutional business practices, employment and workplace systems, programming, and initiatives. 

4.       Ensure that the College maintains a high-performing, mission-driven culture and increase organizational health and effectiveness by strategically gauging staff morale, assessing institutional climate, and addressing organizational issues while providing HR solutions.   

5.       Oversee staff professional training and leadership development. Assess training and development needs and create and manage programs to meet the College’s talent management goals. 

6.       Engaging appropriate stakeholders, develop the College’s strategic diversity, equity, and inclusion vision and operationalize and measure the plan and related goals. Include voices for all represented communities at CCV. 

7.       Develop and implement strategies for employee retention, recognition, and career development. Develop and manage staff succession planning. 

8.       Oversee performance management and appraisal programs.  

9.       Oversee compensation and benefit programs, including job description and classification, salary structure and salary adjustments. Oversee benefit plan communication, enrollment, and administration.  

10.   Assess the competitiveness of human resources programs and practices against the relevant markets and make recommendations for improvements and changes.  

11.   Remain current with employment laws and regulations. Maintain an effective program of compliance with laws and regulations related to human resources and manage relationships with VSCS HR Council and legal counsel.  

12.   Develop and manage organization-wide collection of diversity data as well as other data points related to equity and inclusion and develop an action plan for improvement.  

13.   Coordinate and facilitate the work of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Task Force in collaboration with the committee co-chairs.  

14.   All other duties as assigned by the president.


Preferred and Required Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  •  Bachelor’s Degree in human resources, organizational development, business, social justice, or equivalent. Master’s Degree strongly preferred.
  •  SHRM Senior certified professional (SHRM-SCP) or Senior Human Resources (SPHR) certification preferred.
  • 5 - 7 years of professional experience in all aspects of human resources management, staff development, and managing DEI in the workplace. 
  • Demonstrated understanding of diversity and inclusion concepts in organizations; ability to effectively articulate and leverage the social justice, educational, and business-case rationales for implementing diversity and inclusion best practices.  
  • Demonstrated expertise in strategic HR management, i.e., planning and policy, talent management, selection, compensation, benefits, training and staff development, employee relations, and performance management.  
  • Sophisticated relational aptitude with the ability to build trust and credibility with diverse groups of people from all racial, social, cultural, linguistic, and economic groups. 
  • Possess a strong command of the contexts, cultures, and politics within organizations that impact the implementation of effective organizational change efforts.  
  • Knowledge of higher education culture, policies, and procedures preferred.  
  • Knowledge of the history of the social justice movement in education and applicability in higher education preferred. 

Physical Requirements: Duties performed causes light fatigue of eyes, fingers, or other faculties as a result of repetitive motion and/or long periods of standing or sitting. Duties require little physical effort in work with light to moderate (up to 25lbs) easy-to-handle materials.

Working Conditions: Job is performed in general office or comparable working area with many and frequent distractions such as noise and interruptions. Work schedule may vary during high volume periods.
