Job Description

Goshen College invites applications for a full-time appointment as Assistant or Associate Professor of Communication with expertise in communication and public relations, starting July 2021.

Primary teaching responsibilities will be in the areas of communication, public relations, and courses for the CORE (general education) program, including preparing and teaching courses for adult degree-completion students. The successful candidate will also be able to demonstrate strengths in thematic areas for comparative courses that resonate with other academic programs at Goshen College - e.g., Women's and Gender Studies, Sustainability or International Education. In addition to teaching, the position includes advising and mentoring an increasingly culturally, racially and religiously diverse student body and supporting departmental co-curriculars. Specifically, the successful candidate is expected to advise the Goshen College chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America and coordinate the annual C. Henry Smith Peace Oratorical Contest.

The department offers majors in Communication and Public Relations as well as Broadcasting, Film Production and Journalism, and minors in the same areas. Teaching will also include our new adult degree-completion program leading to a BS in Communication. All members of the department have opportunities to develop courses within their expertise.

Goshen College is a teaching college with a 4-3-1 load, and all teaching faculty serve on institution-wide committees and assist with advising, as well as recruiting prospective students. The successful candidate must be ready to contribute to our strong tradition of excellence in research and publication as well as teaching. Candidates must be interested in working closely with students and fellow faculty members as part of a small, vibrant campus and community.

Successful candidates should be able to teach such courses as Communication Across Cultures, Organization Communication, and Principles of Public Relations. Other possible topics would be in the candidate's area of expertise and may include such courses as: Communication Research, Communication and Society, Media Law and Ethics, and other new courses.

Essential Functions:
  • Prepare course syllabi for assigned courses in collaboration with department chair and GC Core director
  • Teach assigned courses with appropriate active and engaged learning practices
  • Mentor students through advising and recruiting activities
  • Develop and teach courses appropriate to adult students returning to complete a college degree
  • Participate in department, school and college meetings
  • Pursue appropriate professional development opportunities, including scholarly activities
  • Complete other assigned duties
Supervisory Responsibility:
  • Students in assigned courses
  • Student workers in department as needed
Education and Experience:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in communication or a related field and significant professional experience
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the college/university level
  • Development of thematic areas for teaching communication
  • Commitment to curriculum development
  • Commitment to teaching in the CORE
  • Interest in collaboration and service
  • Commitment to working with adult students and diverse populations
  • Commitment to the mission and core values of Goshen College

Work Environment/Environmental Conditions:

Mostly inside/office conditions; Temperatures are usually moderate; Artificial lighting; Some exposure to dust and molds. Using computers and other office equipment; moving around campus, inside and outside.
