Assistant Professor - Tenure Track

Music Education

Department of Music

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide visionary leadership in developing an innovative and comprehensive K-12 music education degree program that incorporates diverse perspectives through single certification in vocal/choral and instrumental tracks
  • Teach courses in the music education sequence including, but not limited to PK - 12 grade levels, including elementary and secondary music techniques
  • Supervise and participate in field observation and student teaching courses
  • Teach in additional areas including, but not limited to Music Technology, Music Theory/Aural Skills, or other areas of expertise based on candidate's experience and interest
  • Serves as a dual appointment in the Holland College of Arts and Media and the College of Education, Health, and Human Studies, serving as liaison for the Music Department
  • Coordinate and participate in advising for Music Education majors within the department
  • Participate in committee work including departmental, college, and university committees
  • Maintain an active profile in research and scholarly activity
  • Maintain visibility in professional organizations related to Music Education
  • Serve as a liaison and resource to public school music teachers in the region

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or ADB (with Ph.D. by August 2021) in Music Education (Degree must be from a regionally accredited or internationally accredited/government certified university.)
  • Demonstrated evidence of visionary leadership in developing an innovative and comprehensive Music Education program of excellence that incorporates diverse perspectives
  • Demonstrated experience with vocal/choral and instrumental music education
  • Certification in one or more of the following: Orff, Kodaly, and/or Dalcroze
  • Demonstrated field experience supervision
  • Demonstrated public school teaching experience; minimum of 3 years
  • Demonstrated ability to teach a variety of courses, including face-to-face, blended, and online
  • Demonstrated experience developing choral and instrumental music education curriculum
  • Demonstrated experience incorporating appropriate technologies (1:1 devices, audio, audio-visual, web-based) in courses
  • Demonstrated peer-reviewed research or creative activity
  • Evidence of effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to participation in professional organizations and mentoring students through such organizations
  • Demonstrated commitment to collegiality when interacting with others within the University community
  • Demonstrated commitment to a diverse work environment, including working with multi-cultural populations and an understanding of, and sensitivity to, issues affecting women and minorities

Departmental Information: The department of Music includes 16 full time and 6 part time faculty members that serve approximately 150 undergraduate majors, and is located on the River Campus, the only dedicated campus for the Arts in Missouri. The department offers the Bachelor of Music in Performance degree (B. M.), with options in voice, winds, strings, keyboard, guitar, and percussion; the Bachelor of Music Education degree (B.M.E.), in either vocal or instrumental certification; and the Bachelor of Arts degree (B.A.), with a major in music. The musical arts flourish at Southeast. The department supports 12 ensembles including orchestra, band, and choral groups. Several small student ensembles and faculty chamber groups further compliment this creative climate. Student soloists compete and perform regularly across the region, and many faculty members maintain active performing schedules.
