Job Description

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore is currently accepting applications for the position of Endowed Chair and Professor of Practice in Entrepreneurship and Program Innovation. This new role, one of the few named positions in the university, necessitates someone with a strong academic background, who is also a demonstrated practitioner within entrepreneurship. The position of Endowed Chair and Professor of Practice is a non-tenure track twelve-month position that is renewable and reports directly to the Dean of the School of Business and Technology (SBT).

The School of Business and Technology is home to five academic departments: Business, Management & Accounting; the Built Environment; Computer Science and Engineering Technology; Engineering and Aviation Sciences; and Hospitality and Tourism Management. Additionally, the School offers several of its academic programs at University System of Maryland (USM) Regional Centers and off-campus locations including the Universities at Shady Grove (USG), USM at Hagerstown, and the Baltimore Museum of Industry (BMI).

The Endowed Chair will shape a new interdisciplinary, cross-campus program in entrepreneurship, aimed at teaching foundational skills of business creation and implementation. The Endowed Chair will also facilitate the development of new products and businesses by students and faculty. The Endowed Chair will lead the development of outside partners and advisors to enrich entrepreneurial learning. Ultimately, the Endowed Chair provides leadership and promotes the attainment of the University's mission to serve the greater Eastern Shore and the State of Maryland community through constructive community engagement, job creation, mentoring, and internships.

Teaching Contributions:
The incumbent will design, develop, and teach undergraduate and graduate courses based on their expertise related to entrepreneurship. The incumbent will be required to teach, as needed, up to two (2) courses per semester in entrepreneurship or related academic area.

Research Contributions:
The incumbent is expected to serve as principal investigator and research advisor on research grants. Also, the incumbent is expected to act as industry liaisons to identify research topics and research support. Lastly, the incumbent is expected to publish in professional journals and/or conferences.

Service Contributions:
The incumbent will be actively involved in school and university service activities including professional development opportunities.

Required Qualifications:
Terminal degree in a field in the School of Business and Technology e.g., Business, Construction Management, Engineering, or Hospitality and Tourism Management. The candidate shall have attained regional and national prominence and, when appropriate, international recognition of outstanding achievement. Additionally, the appointee shall have demonstrated superior teaching abilities. The candidate should have successful recent academic leadership and administrative experience that demonstrates the ability to strongly advocate for excellence in teaching, scholarly activity, and service that meet AACSB, ACCE, ATMAE, or ABET accreditation standards. Strong consideration will be given to candidates with a track record of teaching and developing programs in entrepreneurship and/or in establishing their own start-ups. The candidate's teaching, scholarship, and service profile must be commensurate with an academic appointment at the rank of Professor of Practice. Lastly, a track record of acquiring outside funding.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Refereed journal publications in entrepreneurship or related fields.
  • Experience with startups, early-stage growth, founding teams, and/or entrepreneurial professional organizations.
  • Professional business experience.
  • Evidence of the ability to teach in other academic programs from an interdisciplinary perspective.
  • Demonstrated community service.
  • Experience as a business leader.
  • Experience as chair of an academic program.
