Job Description

  The University of Virginia Department of Anesthesiology and Division of Pain Medicine is seeking an ABA certified or eligible physician candidates with fellowship training in Pain Management committed to a career in academic medicine to join our multi-disciplinary Pain Management Center.  Our Pain Management Center and Acute Pain Service is designated as a Center of Excellence by the American Pain Society.  The division currently provides pain management services for over 10,500 outpatient visits including 4,000 outpatient procedures each year.  The division is comprised of a diverse multidisciplinary team of board-certified pain medicine physicians, psychologists, and nurse practitioners.  We are currently in the process of expanding our facility and services to meet the growing demands of our practice.  Notably, the department has partnered with the medical center to grow a preoperative optimization program.  The program will include targeted preoperative pain management services for complex pain patients.

The candidate will complement a strong faculty that is active in health system leadership, have a strong regional and national reputation in pain management and are productive in clinical research.  The ACGME accredited fellowship program currently consists of 6 fellows from diverse core specialty backgrounds.  Pathways and mentorship for further professional development are highly available.

The Division of Pain Medicine is a critical part of UVA Department of Anesthesiology.  Annually, the department provides anesthesia services for approximately 60,000 cases in over 50 anesthetic locations, which include main operating rooms, an ambulatory surgical center. The department also staffs three critical care units (NNICU, TCV, and STICU).  The department trains over 60 residents per year and is able to attract highly qualified medical students for its residency program.

Rank and tenure status are dependent upon qualifications.

Duties include clinical care; medical supervision of residents, pain fellows, nurse practitioners, and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA); teaching fellows, residents, and medical students; and research (if interested).

Qualified candidates must have an MD or equivalent degree and must have completed an anesthesiology residency program and fellowship training is pain management.
