Department /RISD Description

Rhode Island School of Design is an undergraduate and graduate college of art and design with approximately 2,400 graduate and undergraduate students.

Rhode Island School of Design has a diverse selection of Liberal Arts courses, which form a third of the credits required for graduation by students in seventeen different undergraduate, art and design majors. The Department of Literary Arts & Studies offers over sixty electives per year in literary/cultural studies, creative writing, and theory. Approximately twenty students graduate each year having completed the LAS Concentration, which requires eight or more courses in the department. Teaching load is six courses per year, including one section of a required, writing-intensive First-Year Literature Seminar and the prospect of teaching in either of two interdisciplinary, Liberal Arts-based masters programs: Global Arts and Cultures and Nature, Culture and Sustainability Studies.

Faculty Responsibilities

In addition to teaching, full-time faculty are expected to maintain a professional practice, serve on college committees, advise students, participate in curriculum development and other departmental activities and projects, and contribute to the vibrancy of the intellectual life of the college.

Pending administrative approval, term appointments may be renewed for a second year.
