Visiting Assistant Professor of Sociology
Whitman College

The Sociology Department at Whitman College is seeking candidates for a one-year position with expertise in criminology and/or crime/law/deviance, as well as statistics and quantitative methods, at the rank of visiting assistant professor, beginning August 2021. Additional expertise in other areas welcome. A Ph.D. is required.

The standard teaching load is five courses over two semesters. Instruction is expected to be in-person for 2021-22. The successful candidate will offer the department's course in crime and delinquency, the social statistics course, one other course in criminology or related areas, and an additional elective (which may be a special topics course or one chosen from among current existing electives, which includes courses in race, gender, and environment). In addition, the candidate will participate in the year-long senior thesis sequence (which is one-fifth of the teaching load).

Whitman College -- an undergraduate institution -- is committed to cultivating a diverse learning community. Applicants should explain how their classroom will serve to create and sustain an inclusive learning environment. This statement can be included in the cover letter or the teaching statement. In their cover letter, candidates should address their interest in working at a liberal arts college with undergraduates, majors as well as non-majors, at all levels of instruction.
