Job Description

The primary purpose of this position is for conducting research on developing irrigation scheduling tool, establishing weather stations network, irrigation and water management. The successful candidate will also conduct independent research in the area of water resources and environmental sciences including watershed hydrology, surface/ subsurface water quality monitoring, numerical modeling and spatial and temporal data analyses at the Cooperative Agricultural Research Center (CARC) of Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) College of Agriculture and Human Sciences (CAHS).

Responsibilities:

  • Assists the principal investigator in ongoing project on developing irrigation scheduling tool and establishing weather network and other projects related to watershed hydrology; extreme hydrological events (flood and drought) prediction and evaluation; impacts of land use/cover changes on hydrologic processes; irrigation water management and evaluation of decision support systems for agricultural and landscape settings; irrigation and nutrient best management practices for sustainable use of natural resources and environmental protection in a changing climate; and numerical modeling using spatial and temporal data analyses.
  • Assists in writing research findings for scientific reports and peer-reviewed journal articles; researches proposals to continue and/or extend research work; participates in extension and outreach activities as need by the program; assists other researchers in CARC, e.g., students, researchers and technicians.
  • Assists in achieving the university's commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and service.



Required Education and Experience:

  • Doctorate degree
  • No prior experienced required



Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Ph.D. in hydrology, civil engineering, agricultural engineering, computer engineering or related academic fields emphasizing water resources and environmental science, especially water management, surface and subsurface hydrology, and natural resource management. Academic preparation through formal course work and earned credits, and/or professional experience consistent with the subject areas of academic or research.
  • Strong numerical hydrologic modeling experience including the use of different models and developing different water management tools.



Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Experience in the use of laboratory analytical techniques, field research design and implementations at different scales, spatial and temporal data analyses, and computer programing (e.g., high level computer program languages including Java, C++, Python, PHP or related languages, SAS statistical software, MS-Access databases packages).
  • Capacity and desire to work cooperatively in multidisciplinary teams, and capability to publish research findings in high impact factor peer-reviewed journals.
  • Excellent scientific writing and communication skills.
  • Skills and familiarity in deploying and managing field instrumentation, e.g., soil moisture sensors, groundwater monitoring wells, data-loggers and sensor networks.
  • Ability to work with and train undergraduate and graduate students on using different laboratory and field equipment and software.
