Job Description

This position reports to the dean's office. The Chair supervises the work of all faculty and staff members assigned to the Department of Communications; assists the dean with formulating and administering instructional and academic policies; develops and revises courses, ensures that course syllabi are prepared properly and are up to date and incorporates methods for improving instruction. They transmit objectives and departmental reports to the dean; promote the preparation of grant proposals to fund departmental programs; assist in administering grants awarded to support such programs; supervise the preparation of materials pertaining to the department to be published in University catalogs; identify the need for new faculty positions or the need to fill vacant positions; evaluate the performance of faculty members of the department; prepare class schedules, makes faculty assignments, and ensure that the competencies are consistent with departmental objectives. They also ensure that all departmental majors and minors receive proper academic advising; determine the resource needs (e.g., supplies, equipment, library and related materials) and ensure these needs are met. In consultation with the Dean and University financial planners, they will prepare and submit a departmental budget, ensure the approved budget is administered properly. This is a teaching position, and Chairs will teach courses as prescribed for academic chairs and perform other duties as assigned.

  • Ph.D. or Terminal Degree in any Communications based academic discipline administered by the department (Public Relations, Journalism (Print or Digital/Electronic), Communications Literacy, Recording Technology, or Recording Industry)
  • TV and Radio, credentials to qualify at the rank of associate or full professor, five (5) years of teaching experience, and at least five (5) years of demonstrated progressive leadership at the departmental, College, University level, or at-large.
